OK, for the self tapper doubters, here's proof of the effectiveness of selftappers. These are just 15mm long and fairly narrow gauge. The anvil is 1½cwt. The wood is an offcut from my transom which has been out in all weathers for 4 years and it's boggin wet but still OK.
The screws are nowhere near at their limit.
