Toggs for Sproggs

My 2 girls are always complaining of the cold at this time of year when on the boat. Does anyone know of a good but cheapish drysuit or fishing suit brand for kids, or have any other suggestions as to what they could wear?

vince - what age are they? we got some excellent (and although it wasn' cheap it wasn't extravagent either) ski suits for our todler from littletrekkers a wee while ago.

I also noticed the other day on the crewsaver website they do "spraysuits" for kids in the same colours as my cosalt flotation suit - so next year we might have "team colours"!

Hi Polwart. They are 12 and 8. Just had a look at the crewsaver site, i might not get anything for the eldest on there, but for my youngest the all in ones look really good. Looks like a drysuit for the 12 year-old then!£££.....?

ahh... too old for the littletrekkers stuff then. (Thought they might be older if they were tough enough to go out at this time of year).

Drysuits are pretty expensive - for something they will grow out of pretty quickly especially if they don't go in the water in cold weather. I am sure I have seen childrens flotation suits (around 60-70 quid) somewhere. If I can find a link I'll post it...

how about:

Why don't you give them a good coating of 'deep heat' before you go out?

What size do you need for the 12 yearold? I might well have a ravenspring to fit. You'll prob have to get it new boots though as the smallest I've got has size 6 boots.

Aidan
I have worn ski gear in a boat - and when it gets wet it gets very heavy - I did it once and decided that if I went in the water I would need to take the salopettes off just to stay afloat! Float suit - designed for the job -much better (or dry suit with appropriate underclothing even better but more expensive).

Good point, didnt think of that. However, the insulation must be a good idea if and only if you have increased buoyency in Lifejacket.
Alot of this insulation adds to the floatation,

Dry suits are a bit uncomfortable I hear.

Not in ski wear - it fills up with water and becomes heavy and offers poor thermal protection once in the water. In contrast a flotation suit uses closed cell foam so offers good insulation (in and out of the water) and extra bouyancy.

One of the Candians on here recently posted a link to a video which was an excellent advert for a proper float suit rather than ski wear.

I personally agree with your comments about dry suits - not the most comfortable things to wear for long periods - but the majority of people here swear by them.

I wear a drysuit normaly, but if its realy cold or i`m fishing (with hooks!) then the fishing suit is warmer and you can abuse it more. The problem is when you have kids that wont stop growing! The drysuits are so expensive for what is realisticly 1 seasons wear.

Grab one of the taller ones then. It won't hurt for it to be a bit wrinkly for a season
