Reference the medical required for commercial endorsements, you do not have to have the ENG1. The MCA/RYA ML5 medical that your GP can do is all that is required.

Anybody any experience of how strict the restriction on diabetics is? Is it as tight as ENG1?
Do they apply the rules on a case by case basis or is it a blanket ban?

Under 16 Endorsement

My son has a Level 2 'endorsed' ticket, he is 16 on Jan 13th 2004. Can he still apply to the RYA for his 'full' Level 2 & ICC (Like mine)?

Does our current ICC cover us for >10 miles (see earlier in the thread)? Are we grandfathered?

Now your son has reached 16 you can either approach the original school who issued the ticket (or the RYA) for a level 2 without the 'must be supervised by a competent adult' endorsement & then apply for an ICC with the new certificate.

I have an Advanced ticket, instructors ticket, short range cert, sea survival and frts aid cert. All I need is a ML5 medical. Now I know that I can't get an ENG1 (I go to sea occasionally and need an exemption to get on board) but is the ML5 less strict on insulin dependent diabetes?
Is is easy to pass a medical as long as it is taken as personal health and fitness and not just a blanket no as ENG1, anybody any idea? It is an expensive way to find out just going for the medical!

You asked about how strict the rule is on diabetics.

I am insulin dependant and have had massive difficulty getting past the statements on the ML5 form issued by mca and Rya.
I was advised it is case by case, but I would be unlikely to get authority to go out far on my own.

It states
"you are unlikely to be issued with a licence/ certificate if,for example.

then various conditions listed
including
"if you need injections of insulin for diabetes"

I also got a print from MCA site on their list it states
insulin dependant = 4 (permanently unfit~~~)
non insulin dependant stabilised in abscence of complications
graded as 1 = fit but may require supervision for 2 years.

I understand that the GP can do a medical however the fact is that diabetes is on the list issued by the MCA and adopted by all the authorities who may not realise that a good diabetic knows he/she is ill etc etc before he or she has a problem, they also have concerns about if you need to exert yourself for long periods.

I have phoned the MCA who are brilliant and suggest that I send in an ML5 etc for consideration and advise that if I can be put on the water they will get me there however it may be with say crew on board etc.
It does matter where you go.
I was advised to put a case with the medical ie showing
where I was operating, the proximity to land and rescue etc, the equipment on the boat ie hydraulic steering , electric trim tilt, lucozade placed in bow , mid section and to stern of boat, experiences of friends as references also reccomended as were those of the specialist treating you. Details of the lack of hypos and statem,ents of how much warning you get of lows etc.
why equipment , aparently all these gizmos may save the valuable energy for when an emergency occurs.
I am lucky I have chosen to operate in what are termed CATAgorised waters and as such the waters are not regarded as sea in the same way.
The MCA are printing as we speak the codes for small passenger vessels operating in catagorised waters, one of the main benefits are that there is the significant potential of me getting afloat,

apologies if some comments appear jaded I do realise public health is an issue and that there is now the individual case by case assessment, but it appears there is still the need dogged persistance to win on this area.01227 373372 mike .Good luck

To renew a commercial endorsement:
1) medical MCA ML5 ( e mail me if you need a copy) by your GP.
2) Copy of your sea survival certificate.
3) £15.00 to the RYA together with your certificate for a new rubber stamp + 5 years.
The commercial endorsement, as far as I am aware, always expires on the same date as your ML5 Medical.

Endorsement...

I noticed that on the RYA website - you can get your advanced and L2 endorsed with an ML5 and a Sea Survival certificate, but no mention of VHF or First Aid. Bit odd.

Is it a mistake on the website?!?

but to be in charge of a vessel under commercial conditions you are required by the mca to hold the vhf and 1st aid certificates!
