Just an Idea

Just a quick idea. I think the Rib Net forums are excellent and a great source of information, views and opinions.

Often when I log on, I notice that there are a number of others loged into the forum at the same time (eg tonight: MarkWildey , Phil , toby.budd , Pepper , Alex Brown , nines ).

John, maybe there is demand enough for a Rib chat room on the site.

Just an idea.

Toby

I do believe he was suggesting that an IRC server should be run on irc.rib.net. But there's not really much point in a whole server for just the one channel is there?
I'm an ircop on a smallish IRC server, if there was demaned, we could maybe have a #RIBnet channel there or something, then people could either connect with something like mIRC, or John could put up something like PHP IRC on the site to allow people to use a webchat interface. Just an idea...

Yes, I agree..... but..... I also think perhaps that having an irc channel would take a lot of the activity out of the forums, which would not be so good.

Sorry about the one liner lastnight.... not entirely helpful for anyone who doesn't use irc

I doubt it'd take away from the forums, it's more useful for just having a chat with anyone who happens to be online at the time. I use plenty of forums that also have IRC channels, and both are lively enough.

Not being a computer guru im not intierly sury what your talking about, MRC and PHP? all sounds good, but it has to be simple and obvious to people logging on to rib.net.

I dont think that it would take people away from the forum as it would be mostly just banter, I am sure the forum would still be used for longer, more detailed and drawn out debabes.

I would use it!

mIRC is a Windows client for IRC (Internet Relay Chat). PHP is a web scripting language (this forum is written in PHP) used for various different things, and an IRC client has been written it for use on websites. There are other alternatives, like CGI IRC.

I agree that a chat room would probably be more like general chat and banter, maybe more getting to know each other than having major debates which would remain on the forum. But we'll leave that up to everyone to decide upon, maybe a vote is in order?

Why not start up a #RIBnet channel and see how much interest it gets? I'm very unlikely to use it, but if it does turn out ot be popular I could look at putting PHP IRC on the site.

Rightio then.

Anyone interested, grab yourself a copy of mIRC, and connect to irc.diveservices.co.uk (temp address, servers have just changed and dns records havent updated yet, will after that be irc.telefragged.com). Once connected, type /join #RIBnet

More detailed guide to getting started with mIRC coming shortly.

Right, more detailed guide on getting onto this 'ere chat room.

Firstly, download yourself a copy of mIRC. Once it's downloaded, install it, then run it.

Right, now you'll be looking at a nice shiny installation of mIRC. The quick way out now is to close any of the smaller dialogs that present themselves, and in the main window, click inside the small white rectangular area at the bottom, and type "/server irc.diveservices.co.uk" then hit enter. Once the text stops scrolling, simply type "/join #RIBnet", and there you go!

See anyone that's interested in this trial run of a chat room in there!

New to me too!

I just got "You're not on a channel"

Also, do I need to allow my firewall to permit mIRC to "act as a server"?

Nope, you shouldn't need to change anything on a firewall. Pepper, you're probably missing out the "/" at the start.

Got there!

Anyway, a quick question about your website...

Is the "dyanmic" a distance (metres?)

Cheers,
Rich.

All done! Maybe should schedule a time for a few of us to log on to see if we can kick it off.

This should be interesting.
I haven't understood a word anyone has said for the last two pages!
In summary, my guess is that some people are going to "talk" to some other people, but nobody is ever going to know if they did or not!

Well I'm in there from about 5pm till 12ish weeknights. If anyone cares to suggest a best time for people to be there, go ahead.

Pepper, yeah dynamic is the distance in metres you can swim whilst holding your breath.

Brian, yup that's the plan, to talk to each other. Last night pep here got onto the server but took him a while to get into the channel, but once he was there he realised we were talking

Didn't you used to run a computer company Brian?

IRC chat sounds like a good idea. I'll download the neccessary tonight when I get home. (After I've installed my broadband connection - yippee!). Good suggestion to have a specific time - howabout sunday evening?

Yes Alan, I did run a computer company.
But thats what I did-run the company.
I employed others to talk gobbledegook to each other! One of them was so good at it, that she actually persuaded me to marry her. (Still don't understand what she is on about most of the time!)
