Cruising in Safety

Hi everyone,

As you may be aware I now am the proud owner of Southcoast Two, a 5.3M Humber Attaque + Mariner 90Hp.

I am preparing the boat for crusing and i was woundering what & how much kit to take?

Has anyone made up a list of essential & recommended kit to take wheather just going for a spin or attempting there first channel crossing.

I have already made a start on my list:-
Compass, GPS, VHF, First Aid kit, Anchor & 50m warp, Paddles, Fuel Tanks (50lts Main plus 2X 6 Gallon Spares). Coastal Flare Pack, Nav Lights plus spare bulbs.

All help advice is as always greatly recieved.

P.S. Is anyone thinking of crusing to Plymouth from Solent Area for the Rib Net Meeting in May or is it cheaper to Trailer by Road?

Sounds like a good safety kit. Lifejackets and appropriate clothing go without saying. Mobile phone in waterproof aquapack sensible move as well. A Drybag (avail from most diveshops) is useful thing to put clothes, sandwiches, cameras etc in and can be bungied to console or deck.

Recommend that unless its absolutely calm you do solent to Plymouth by road. It will cost you loads in fuel and you wont have the range to do it in one trip. No petrol alongside between solent and dartmouth AFAIK, so would have to stop and hump it from a garage. More sensible move is to trailer down to Plymouth and do you Ribbing when you get there!

I have published my 'kit' list on my website, see below.

I was also thinking about travelling by sea in May, but i have a lot, lot further to come - taking a few days over it - certiably havent thought it through yet nor looked into marina facilities that far west! In fact the more i think about it the further i realise it is, might work out the £££'s...

I forgot to mention the lader. Yes I do have one (not for me though I climb back using the engine) but for wife children and guests.
Cheers John for reminding it to me have added it in.

They were selling those ladders 95 steps) in a blue Plastimo bag at O M Watts for £20. I don't know if they have gone now.

RIBase
I have always found that trying to climb back over the side of a rib or large inflatable, you would need to have both the physique and training of Olga Korbet!
I always go round the back (making damm sure the engine/prop is not running, of course) and step on the cavitation plate and jam myself between the engine and the tube. With only a modest amount of wriggling I can get back on board.
On the contrary, when I have tried to use a side ladder, the b****y thing always goes under the boat and usually, so do I.

Bian

When we meet up will show the art of get up on the RIB on the ladder . Actually you need the right length of rope and the right angles on the ladder.
However, for safety reasons I do excatly what you do climping up by using the engine's cav plate as a step!!! HEHEHE
I can jump on from the sides when I didn't have much to eat too (no bacn sandwiches for me please I'm on a diet!!) LOLOL

Crikey, Manos - you're certainly well equipped! - careful how you read that

OK - I'm going to risk being a bit boring here, but bear with me for a minute. I've got a couple of excel spreadsheets with different scenarios for kit lists (helps me stop dithering about "oh, shall I take such and such just in case...") so I can get packed up quickly and out of the house.

So, here's the list I use for chartering a RIB, which assumes a certain level of equipment already on the RIB (anchors, fire extinguishers, etc) but also a certain level of distrust of the incumbent kit.

Wellies & Waterproofs - or - Drysuit
Life jacket
Re-arm kit for above
h/h GPS
h/h VHF & waterproof case
mobile 'phone & waterproof case
Sunglesses
Hat
Geko helmet
Lanyards for everything (Didn't have one on my swiss army knife, which could have ended up at the bottom of St Malo marina
- except that Charles saved it
Chart(s)
Almanac page copies (use the colour copier at work )
Tide and current info (as above)
Plastic zipper pouch for above
Passage plan, waypoint list
notebook
pen&pencil
extra fleece
flares
sun tan lotion
food/drink/chocolate/fruit
spare shoes&socks
gloves
wet wipes
AA batteries
camera
key float
inhaler (read personal medication here)
certificates (for charter co.)
wallett
anadin
stugeron
2x short warps (handy if single handed as you can get in a bit of a tangle with long warps)
velcro wraps (ex- cable management from a Compaq server!)
bungee
towel
spare engine lanyard
