Fuel fillers

Fuel fillers,

Just in the process of moving the fuel filler from it's stupid location under the seat to somewhere more useful.

Where 'av other people got them - and at what angle - horizontal - vertical or somewhere in between? On what surface and where?

Hi Daniel

The side of the console is quite popular. You can get moulding which you can bolt in place and just connect a hose to the end of.
I think they also have the breather in them.

Talking about breathers if you mount things low down make sure only air can get in the breather and fule in the filler, and not water.

That was quick!

Thanks - that's what i was hoping, would such a moulding have an angled intake? I will keep an eye out at the boatshow on sat.

Do you think it matters if the vent is lower than the filler?

Daniel,

I have e-mailed you a photo of the boat I am hoping to get, it has the fuel filler on the left (Port) side of the consul. May give you an idea of the set up.

Rather than use the ordinary petrol ones, buy one for Diesel. They are a much finer filter and if you have the glass bowl type underneath the disposalable filter you can see if any water is inside. Don't buy from a marine supplier as they are very expensive instead find a truck dealer or fuel injection pump firm. They should be about £35. They may not be recommended for petrol but they work fine and I have had them fited to my ribs for the last five years. The proof of the pudding is the ordinary fliter in the engine stays clean throughout the year. Replacement filters cartridges are about £4. Pete

Now there is a damned good tip.

Some years ago I owned a 750cc BMW motorcycle. I needed to buy a couple of rubber diaphragms for the carbs. The BMW ones were £15.00 each. Some one told me that Hillman Hunter carbs had the same ones. So, off I went and got 2 Hillman Hunter carb diaphragms for just £4.00! When I took them out of the box and compared them with the BMW ones I was replacing they were EXACTLY the same. They were made in the same factory but put in different boxes, one for BMW and one for the Hillman.

Also many parts on the Jaguar cars shared parts with the Austin 1800, but of course the Jag parts were many times more expensive.

So, has anyone else on Ribnet got any tips like Pete7?

Are you sure it was exactly the same rubber material ?
Did they last long enough ?
