Depth sounder for fast ribbing

Any echo sounders/combination units I've had cut out at about 25 knots, cos the transducer is a transom mount. I was considering a through hull type this time, or forward looking. Trouble is foreward looking to work right should be related to engine speed, is there such a thing? , your thoughts guys

I made the mistake of getting a transom mount - through hull are much better apparently but not as accurate at rest/low speed.

The transducer is the most important part of the setup - just as with radar the scanner is far more important than the head unit.

I found a great transducer that would have been just what I want - until I found out it cost £3,000!!!

No problem with my Garmin 80 - cheap as chips, transom mount transducer. Seems to work at most speeds.

I do have the transducer mounted very low. Maybe this makes a difference?

We have done this before as said earlier - We have a couple of Eagle cuda 128 sounders-dead cheap, transom mount transducer But siliconed into the drainwell taking care not to get air bubbles in the thin layer of silicon. Sounds at all speeds on the 5.5m humber/90hp outfits.Unlike the hummingbird which lost the plot big style at anything over a crawl. Now for a real transducer you need the big thingie the surveyor had when we did a survey on a nuclear power station water inlet area the other week. Coupled into a laptop and with differential gps the picture it gave was amazing.

Maybe I've just been lucky to put my transom mounted transducer in just the right place, it came with the Garmin 240 and appears to work fine at most speeds.

Its so good that I've often wondered what all the fuss has been about on the forum. It even stays put when bouncing about in waves and being beached.

It could also be the shape of the Ocean's hull I suppose.
Its positioned as close to the prop as the instructions recommended, and is about 1/4 inch below the hull at the inboard end.

I'm just too lazy (and too much of a wimp) to start drilling holes in m'transom. No doubt they work better where they are supposed to be but if I stick my silicon in the wrong place i can peel it off and try again, and again and again til I get it right-and then I can always take it out again if I wanna put a different one in. Silicon is the answer for the indescisive boat owner (I think-probably - but then again perhaps not-decisions decisions )

Mine is mounted inside the hull, infront of the engine bay, and works at any speed up to (and including) 40kts.
