Hi,

Have you tried GT Towing in Potters Bar/Hatfield?

Cheers

It's easy - ish!

I'd advise buying new hubs - probably only a couple of £ more expensive than bearings on their own. It's what I did last time.

It's not too difficult a job, just messy!

From memory:-
1) Take off hub cap
2) Remove slit pin from shaft
3) Unscrew nut
4) Pull off hub (back bearing may come off with it, or may be left behind, in which case take it off).
5) Pack new hub with grease
6) Grease u the bearings (best done using fingers, and work into rollers on bearings)
7) Put on rear bearing (make sure it's the right way round!)
8) Put hub on
9) put on front bearing
10) Screw nut back on, tight, then backed off enough to line up the split pin through the hole in the shaft (should be about 1/4 of a turn if it was tight enough in the first place)
11) Refit split pin
12) Fit wheel back on, spin, check tight enough without binding.
13) If 12 seems OK, remove jack, tighten up wheel nuts, jack up again
14) "Wobble" wheel from side to side to make sure play is not excessive (should be a tiny bit or will bind)
15) Remove jack and job done.

No special tools or pullers normally required, just some common sense.

This is as good as I can remember. No doubt it varies a bit on different makes of trailer, and others may well add to or disagree with some of the above, but it's how we've always done it.

Make sure you have the right type of grease - GT will tell you what's suitable.

Hope this helps

Neil

Trailer bearings

I would add a few things to Niel's excellent instructions. There is usually a rubber seal behind the back bearing; always replace this. Jack up trailer and put on stands/blocks remove the old bearings, they all have part numbers on them and take them to your nearest bearing dealer, even if they do have the same make they have a cross reference list as bearings are made to international standard sizes. Regarding hubs: light pitting is ok but if deep then replace. While your at it add a set of " bearing buddys" to self lubricate the bearings ( good investment) Last but not least : take on a 10 mile test drive, stop and put your hand on each wheel hub; if just warm and if all the same then you are Ok . If one or more is hotter than the others then you have the nut too tight so back off a further split pin notch. Hope Niel does not mind me adding this.
Regards.

No worries LL, there's some things you tend to do automatically without thinking about it. And I did not know about the bearing bussies for instance!

SBS used to use ALKO "sealed for life" bearings on their trailers (I had a 2002 4m model). If your has this you can't change the bearings. You have to replace the whole axle

never trust a teenage mechanic

make you wonder why they sell these then!

http://www.trailertek.com/acatalog/Wheel_Bearings.html

about 6 bearings down you will find replacement sealed for life bearings. the term sealed for life means that you don't grease them until the bearing fails, but as it happens you can open em up and grease them but that's another issue

sealed or not sealed this is a very good place to get your stuff from and Karl is a good bloke and erudite too!
