I have a CP 150C (now discontinued) which looks like a CP 155C. It is a nice compact unit which flush or surface mounts.

It does just what it says on the box. Since I found the "Sunlight" display setting, I can not fault it.

The joystick takes a bit of getting used to, but I now find it easier than a load of buttons.

It also carries a 3 year gaurantee and now has the added support of Mr Jon Brooks, who will no doubt be along soon.

I have two Standard fixed mount VHFs (one in the house, so that hardly counts!) as well as a hand-held. They get dunked often and I have never had a problem. Now that I think of it, I also have an old Standard hand-held which must be 15 years old. It still works fine, except the battery won't hold a charge and it was less expensive to get a new radio than a new battery.

Ahh Mr. Brooks - I guessed that would be where you would have gone - couldn't really see you sticking up for Silva or similar.

Still gets me why they call Yaesu Standard Horizon - damn Yanks again!!!

Have dabbled in amateur radio in the past and the blokes I know who are into that sort of thing all fight each other over whose best Icom or Yaesu - mmm I wonder???

Really like my 2 handheld VHF sets and was going to get a fixed dsc to replace my stolen Navman untill I saw the size it's HUGE ! but otherwise great kit .
Jon is the chartplotter waterproof enough for open RIB fitting ? The guy on the stand at SBS seemed uncertain . If it is I woukd be keen to buy one to replace stolen Navman Trackfish.

Tim, we had a Standard Horizon plotter on Sccoby Doo. Cant remember the model, there should be a link to a photo below.

http://rib.net/forum/attachment.php?...1&d=1104415871

Nice piece of kit, but VERY prone to condensation. Advice from the manufacturer was to take it off the boat & leave in an airing cupboard over night Not terribly helpful when you live 90 miles away from the boat Wouldn't have another one.

I would never buy a standard horizon chartplotter again. The VHF's are excellent but i would never never buy a chartplotter from them again. I have been thru 4 cp 175 colour chartplotters in two years. Standard fixed it the first time and it only worked for about 2 weeks after being returned. It was then replaced with new units about every four months. If you all thought that Navman have a humidity problem it does'nt even compare to standard horizon's humidity problems. After the fourth return it crapped out for the last time this time it was the antenna. It is sitting in my garage now.

I then went to navman despite reading about everyones headaches with navman mine has not fogged once. My rib is used all year and is subjected to severe weather. lots and lots of rain and saltwater finds its way to my navman weekly. I have now had it for six months.

Again I would never ever buy a standard horizon chartplotter. Their VHF radios are excellent products.

Right let me try to answer all of the questions.

Codders....your not wrong
Even whilst at Icom I made no secret that I felt the Standard kit was good and getting better.
With regard to who is best it depends on who has the right radio at the time.
Icom and Yaesu always battle it out for the top spot.
With regards to marine kit just read the review in PBO in December

None of our plotter, at this time are waterproof.
The new CP180/180i is IPX5 (resistant to jets of water from all angles).
IPX7 is waterproof (1m for 30 mins.
I have not tested this unit to see how it will put up with life on a RIB but watch this space.

At this time we have one fixed VHF, two more to be launched at London.
They are on show at METS as we speak.

If you want to compare them to another brand the best way to look at it is that the VM3500 to M603, new GX1500 to M421 and new GX3000 to the M505. we are also launching a new handheld and a new second station mic.

Ocean

Sorry to hear of the drama you have had.
If I can be of any help please call me or drop me a mail.
Will do my very best to help and sort this for you.

I hope that covers all the points.

Best regards

I don't want to stir things up (honest), but in 3 places on the box for my CP150C it says "3 year Water Proof Warranty and Flat Rate Program."

Is it the unit which is water proof or the warranty?

I own a couple of Standard Horizon Handhelds and until recently had a DSC Fixed Set. I can't praise them enough, I think they're great bits of kit, extremely rugged and durable. My handhelds have been through a ridiculous amount of abuse, and still come up working fantastically (provided I remember to charge the batteries). The fixed set was fantastic on a powerboat with chunky controls and a great feature list.

I have only used one standard horizon plotter, and whilst it was easy to use n all, the display did suffer badly from fogging.

Mark

You are spot on they are.
The reason is that the whole unit is IPX5 but when flush mounted the front panel is waterproof.

So if the unit lets in water via the front end it get replaced.

Hope that makes sense and i am still learning here

Best regards

All the standard chartplotters I have had have been flush mounted. I have had them fog in the dead of summer with 25C weather and no rain.

Thanks for the offer Jon I appreciate it. I am in Canada so I have to deal with the US head office in California.

I have to say standard's customer support has been excellent and they have offered to replace my chartplotter again for the fifth time. I will have it replaced and then sell it. I need a chartplotter that is more relieable. so far the navman has been good to me. Today I was out in 35 knot winds and seas that were 5-6 feet and torrential rain and spray still no fog in the navman.

I cannot praise standard's VHF's enough I am the only vessel to run one out of a fleet of 30 whale watching RIBS and I have more range than any other DSC VHF's out there. I am the only one running one because they just got accepted by transport canada small vessel inspections and I was in the market for a new VHF this year.
