70 mph (load of 60 tonnes) RIB couple gets done for making drug smuggling RIBs, quite amusing, the pictures look quite interesting, but these boats are not that rare, I remember seeing a link to a site where there were military style RIBs with 6-8 racked engines and about 14 metres or so, and they cant have gone that slowly either, what are peoples views on this...

This is quite an old story - well the arrest was a few months back anyway.
They're alledged involvement was provision of boats and laundering (perhaps via provision of the boats).

60 tons = 54431.0844 kg or 54431084.4 g
class A £40 a gram = £2,177,243,376
class C £10 a gram = £544,310,844

aint quite sure why they have been nicked though, after all would ford if a jag was used in a robbery, because it was fast?

Total idiots! Building and supplying boats, however specialised is not an offence. If they'd been a little more clever with the money received for said boats they would have been untouchable. A guy I knew quite well went to Gib in the early 90's and supplied Vector Vulcan and Phantom hulls with mainly Merc XR2's to the tobacco smugglers out there. He wasn't responsible for what the purchasers did with their boats and did quite nicely.

I am sure 1/2 the boats Sunseeker sell - or the cars Ferrari make - also go to the criminal element. Come off it even football clubs are owned by a bunch of crooks these days.

It is all down to those stupid new laws rushed in after Sept 11th - alledgedly to protect us against the terrorists - you know -- those people who are so professional they use chapatti flour to make bombs- just as well they cocked up and forgot to use self raising...........

Prosecutor Simon Draycott QC, said: “I'd like to say this was the mother of all ribs, but the couple had even bigger plans. This vessel however had eight 250hp engines - a total of 2,000hp. At full power it used 900 litres of petrol an hour and had capacity to hold 15,000 litres of petrol.

“This boat was tested in the sea off Lowestoft, and the gentleman who took it out loaded it with six tonnes of shingle, it had five people on board and it was still able to travel at 50mph. This was such a powerful boat it could carry a lot of drugs, a lot of contraband and still go so fast it could outrun any maritime craft.

“Davison, George and Rush knew those buying the boats wanted them for one reason, to transport drugs and contraband from north Africa to southern Spain. They also knew that the money used to pay for the boats was coming from the proceeds of crime,” he said.

At their Lowestoft home, officers discovered fraudulent and forged documents, including forged ownership, insurance, small boat and competency certificates which were handed over with the craft to help conceal the identity of the buyer.

Officers also found plans for a 33m long rib, so large it was capable of carrying five smaller ribs in its hold. However, this boat was never built.

The trial of Rush continues.

Aghhh, couldn't they let them build the 33metre RIB and then have nicked them! - I would have love to have seen that.

Obviously they aren't aware of the big increase in RIB use for thrill rides etc!!!

A few years ago they would have had a Queen's award for export. Isn't it strange how British companies can sell arms and even armoured cars to South American drug barons. As long as you have the right bits of paperwork anything goes!!!
