150 HPDI Yamaha and oil warning indicator

This weekend my 150 oil injected Yamaha had the oil warning indicator flashing when I started it up at the begining of the trip. I checked the large auxiliary oil tank in the boat and the smaller engine tank and both the levels were up. I figured it was a faulty signal from a sending unit and made the decision to run the engine anyway, the engine ran great the whole time. Oil levels by eyeball are fine now as well.

The manual has little information on how the oil level sending unit works so I thought I would ask here.

I have the round style gauge, the oil level is represented by 3 bars, low medium and high. The medium bar was flashing, the low bar was solid. Since the auxilary tank was full, normal would be all three bars solid. Reading the manual, I would expect to see the three bars represent low, medium and high in the auxilary tank. A flashing low bar would display if I were running out of oil.

Anyone experience a flashing "medium" bar before?

Wasn't cold out, was it? A friend had a problem with his 2-stroke oil thickening in cold weather (at or near freezing) and causing alarms. Needless to say, this doesn't happen often here in Sunny California(tm).

Actually, that day a couple of four-strokers had problems with alarms as well, but I don't think they ever figured out what caused those.

I don't want to alarm anybody, but there is a recent TSB issued by Yamaha
about 14 days ago. There is a recall on all HPDI 100+ HP HPDIs' 2004+.( 2t)
The oil pumps must be changed and this will be done under warranty.
Apparantly there is not enough oil getting thru and this can cause over-heating and shut down. CHECK WITH YOUR DEALER. If it cannot be done immmediately add 1 liter of oil to 100 liters petrol. It happened to me about 4 weeks ago and I had to limp backk to the docks at 4 kntt.

I do not know if the recall is also for US models . It may only apply to engines supplied to Europe. But check anyway...

My Yam dealer in Nieuwport told me two weeks ago that they have received notification that my oil pumps MUST be changed. Its all very new and I don't think its been published as such.I contacted Yamaha in Belgium and they confirmed it - but when I pushed to get a TSB number -the man said please "wait a minute " - and I am still waiting. It concerns v6 HPDI blocks 2004+.

I will get more info from my dealer tommorrow and keep you posted.

It does "fit " as seemingly there is a spate of "overheat" warnings and I myself had to shut down both motors three weeks on a fast run from Ostende to Dunkirque.The engines have some 180 hrs each.What I dont understand is that I have been at some 45 knts continually for two hours previousely without any problems the day before...
Was going to try today with added oil -- but we've just had a force 9 and launching is too dangereous. Have to wait until Sunday

TSB OB 0702 of 11/07/07( infact ref. a "note technique" - whether its a TSB or not don't know

ALL HPDI V6 blocks PRIOR to October 2006. ( does not refer to 4 cycl)

150 to 300 hp

The oil injector pump (NOT THE small up pump to the engine holder oil reservoir ) MUST be changed.

Thanks for posting this!

While I think my original for my post is a bad oil level sensor which I was trying to troubleshoot myself, this gets me into the dealer to fix this problem and maybe one more serious.

My 2000 has been trouble free until this "sensor" problem.

Here in the states Ford makes a SUV called an Explorer, affectionately known by mechanics as an Exploder...I owned one.

I checked with the Yamaha dealer and there was no recall for my model of 150 HPDI. Mine was made in 2000. The 200HP and above was another story, they had a brand new advisory for these engines regaurding the oil pump.

I have to say my Yamaha HPDI has been trouble free. This is probably a gauge problem and after 6 years these things fail.
