The well known "drug smuggling ribs" built by Crompton for the Gib Strait. I believe the directors are now doing time for posession of proceeds of crime.

Hydrive want to be careful advertising their part in the build if they dont want to go the same way!

I know one trial collapsed - don't know if they were ever found guilty. Remember they also supplied the law enforcement people.........

I reckon they deserved a Queen's award for export - after all how many Ferraris and BMWs are driven by drug dealers and crooks? They would go out of business overnight without their best customers!!!

How can they possibly be done for living off the proceeds of crime? The manufacturers can't control what is done with it!

That would be as stupid as the manufacturers of a rifle being sued because somebody shot somebody else with it. i.e. it might happen in an American court but any judge in the rest of the world with half an ounce of common sense would throw it out.

Taken from the BBC website:

'Proceeds of crime'

"The ribs (rigid inflatable boats) were built, sold and transported to southern Spain, North Africa and Morocco.

"Mr Davison, Ms George and Mr Rush knew those buying the boats wanted them for one reason, to transport drugs and contraband from North Africa to southern Spain.

"They also knew that the money used to pay for the boat was coming from proceeds of crime."

Ms George has already pleaded guilty to possession of criminal property and money laundering and is awaiting sentence while Mr Davison remains on bail in Spain facing drug smuggling charges.

It does sound like they were more involved than just selling the boats tbh, but if your taking huge sums of cash from your clients without reporting it to the relevant authorities, I believe you would be breaking money laundering laws in most countries

Remember almost anything is classed as money laundering since 911 - supposedly to catch terrorists but in reality to catch everyone else.

Those words the BBC quoted were from the prosecution - I am sure the defence had a different story to tell...............

I'd like to see somebody make that stand up "beyond reasonable doubt" without a confession! Any half decent lawyer would tear it to bits - though if they put their hands up to it then they deserved what they got... amazing.

If they are in trouble, I wonder if the molds for the 60' are avaliable?

Would be a great boat with 600 hp Cummins and Arnesons.

Maybe the spec said:
  • Endurance required = distance from N. Africa to Spain
  • Required speed = faster than the customs boats
  • Storage space = enough for £1M worth of coccaine
