Nacho raid on Yarmouth: Sat 3 Jan 2009

My scurvey crew has theatened mutiny unless they get some Chille Beef Nachos in the Wheatsheaf at Yarmouth next time out. Thwarted through illness, breakdown (accompanying boat, not ours!) and turnback (scurvey crew getting wet and cold) the fourth attempt must work....

Poole - Yarmouth is our plan. Anyone care to join or meet us?

Could be up for this. Would have to meet up off the Run at Christchurch.

Hi - worth considering the channel at the Run is not properly marked at the mo. Fishing marks are out , but it changes hugely over the winter , sometimes day to day .

The £1000 I have spent on new props/ jet impellors has tought me this !

If I had my main boat in the water I'd only try going in/ out at absolute high water & even then being very very carefull !

I'd love to come but I'd freeze in a 4m boat ( and youd leave me behind as I cruise at about 18 knts , cant deal with anythingover 1m waves - in any comfort )

And I thought it was only me who caught the prop!
Went down at the weekend for a look. An interesting "new" channel starting to run East along the wall. I cant remember any channel going that far along the front, but may yet change.
The tides are looking good from about 1100 through to 1600. Would give about 1.2m and with it being flat calm (I hope), should be able to tip toe out.

Used to be all the way along the wall in 2007 & in 2008 there still a small channel there. Who knows - the lifeboat is a good guide , but they tend to 'go for it' to reduce the draft ! Works for them but you need balls of steel !

I've asked the fisherman , but they always seem to resent speaking to leisure boats !

If it turns out flat calm I may head out in little boat , but probably not all the way to Yarmouth . I'll see & head out on the day if it looks OK.

I've twice (last year) tried getting into Christchurch in the winter - and turned back with light grazes to the prop each time! One attempt was on the basis of the lifeboat getting out; but as Blackroady says: they're doing it at full tilt and I ain't got the bottle at my age!

As you say, however: the tides are good.

There are currently two boats (with the possibility of a third) planning to meet at Poole Harbour entrance around 10.58am, so should be off Christchurch around 11.22am. Am happy to go any speed, so accompanying a smaller boat is no problem.

Blackroady: PM me if you want to come along as crew (currently two on my boat and four on the other) but it might be fun for you to make it to Yarmouth in a small boat in company! Perhaps wait and asses the weather/sea state nearer the time.

Steve: if Christchurch is too dodgy to get out, how about launching at Baiter? (Only about 300m from our marina). Again PM me if you decide this.

OK - so having had a glass of wine & not feeling cold yet my plan will be ;

I'll drive down to the run tomorrow to see where the channel is . If it looks doable then on Sat (Streaker- the small boat- only draws a foot with the engine tilted) I'll launch from Christchurch @10.30 Sat and be off Hengistbury for 11.10 (ish) .

If it looks iffy tomorrow I'll PM you guys to see about crewing from baiter .

Steve - Ill take some pics tomorrow of the run & post them - its low tide at 7am - but as its dark, new years day & I may well have ahangover I probably wont see it then ! Shame as thats when you can really tell where the channel is ! Might make it easier for you to choose baiter or not.

Having seen the pics of peoples outing this week when I was tuck in an office I am itching to get out ! ( I've already started charging the radio/ GPS batteries ! )

I'll be looking like this goon on my last cold trip out !!!

We will definitely be out either Saturday or Sunday so if I can get th ecrew together for Saturday we may well try and join you at Yarmouth - not sure about the beef nachos but the chicken ones on Monday were excellent (re: Solent Blast on 29th Dec!)!
We would be launching from Hamble Point Marina so would just meet you at Yarmouth unless anyone else is planning to go from the Southampton/Portsmouth side?

I'm definately up for Sat ( as long as the weather stays as is - forecast not to change much ), Launching Xchurch in the morning - will check on other boat & be off hengistbury as planned.

Looking good to go. There's a high currently forecast to be right above us for Saturday.

Subject to weather, the two Poole boats will aim to be off Hengistbury around 11.11am listening on VHF 16/77 to RV with Streaker and, hopefully, Ermintrude (who has a PM from me) and all cross to Yarmouth together to meet DizzyLizzie for lunch in the Wheatsheaf.

Sorry: been away for last 24 hrs with no internet access but still looking good (if cold) for tomorrow. Will be bringing spare fleeces, gloves, hats etc for anyone needing them. Have just got in from checking boat: tubes now newly inflated for the cold weather.

However, put a call out every so often on 77: we'll be monitoring it and 16.

The temperature in Bournemouth at 9.00am is forecast below zero so your heater will be useful - to you, if not the westward lot! Oh well: thermals for us and T-shirts for you again.
