Reeds Condurro Nautical Phone

At the boat show today I came across this new waterproof phone. It's got some silly gadgets (altimeter, laser pointer!) but looks like a very tough bit of kit.

Radio Technology: GSM 900/1800 (GSM850/1900 option)
Dimensions: 53 mm X 115 mm X 24mm
Weight: 142Gram and battery
Display: 2.0 TFT 262K color 176x220 pixels
Autonomy: Standby time up to 450 hours talk time 4.5 hours
Phonebook Storage: 300 contacts
SMS Storage: 100 messages
Battery: Li-ion Battery 3.7V/1300mAh
Features

Water Proof
Dust Proof IP4 Grade
2m drop test passed
Torch Lighting
Laser Pointer
Built in barometer and altimeter
Built in Compass
Built in Thermometer
MP3 Player
64 tone ringer
FM Radio
Calculator and Alarm Clock
Mini SD Flash Card
IPX4 Water Proof Compliant

The RRP is £199 but there's a boat show offer of £159.99 which includes a free wind up charger, 256mg memory card, and 12 months subscription to Reeds Online Almanac (which is worth £35 on its own).

I know that a few people have said that they want a waterproof phone, and Reeds are keen to get some of these out into the marketplace. If we can get an order together for a few of these we can probably negotiate another few quid off, so let me know if you might be interested and I'll see what they'll offer.

Yes, they will. You can either use a contract SIM from another phone, or get a cheapo PAYG SIM. At this price it's almost worth getting one just to leave on the boat. You don't even need any credit to call the Coastguard on 999

That's quite an impressive price considering that it's not locked to a network!

Shame its only IPX4 (= splashproof).

I have used some of the earlier Nokia ruggedised phones. One of the problems is that they don't properly protect the charging/data contacts for saline environments. I presume that when disconnected on some of the contacts still have a voltage applied and this electrolises the contacts away as soon as you get a decent electrolite (the sea). Dropped the phone one rough day and it slid down the deck into the sump. By the time that I had realised it was missing, one of the charging contacts was gone. Phone worked fine but it could not be recharged. I think that they only properly considered freshwater immersion, not saltwater.

Hi John, Yes I am interested in a SIM free option or take it as they supply and just swap over to my SIm

Interesting extras included lijke a barometer, believe it or not under Coding we are meant to have a barometer on board( as I was advised) , luckily my VHF has a built in system but they even accept watches that have the unit included so the phone being waterproof with extras hits the buttons.

JCB Phone

Looks VERY similar to the "rugged" JCB branded phones available less than 6 months ago. They were rubbish and and had many problems with them!!!

I did wonder that...

vs

The button layout is the same, but the screen looks bigger and I think the case a tad more chunky.

I have spoken to the Simon Whittley MD of Reeds at the show and he is very clear this is not a JCB phone and is still keen to do a good deal if John gets a list. I will try tyo copy the phone deatils I have been given for you all to look at. I like the phone and its options.

I think I have attached the document!

I also saw the MD bouncing the phone off the show floor and it still worked so appears rugged enough and does have some nice features and you can put your own SIM in, so John please get some names for a good deal
