Asda Fuel.

I put 100 ltrs of Asda's finest unleaded in the boat yesterday. We had a long day out with it with no issues. Today we had a 5knt tootal up the river for a cream tea with my 77yo Father.
On the way back the Icommands chirped in and read 'Water in fuel'. I cancelled them and 10mins later up it came again. Anyway, I hauled the boat out and brought it home. I first removed the engine filter and poured the contents into a jamjar, it was half water!!. I then removed the inline filter, that was half fuel and half brown sludgy sh*t.

I know that aluminium tanks can produce condensation, but not brown, sludgy sh*t. I emptied both filters, replaced them, ran it up and checked the in-line filter again, it was fine.

It's not good to pay £100.9/Ltr to buy crap to put through one's pride and joy.

Ahh but remember Asda only get about 3p of that - it is 70% the governments fault........

I would make a serious complaint to Asda - you may not be the only one and you may get compensation!!!

dont know about up your way but down here its delivered by the BP boys (little sticker on cab doors) so maybe wise to steer clear of them too????

OR you put deisel in!!

I've just spoken to the Asda Duty Manager, initially, she was rather dismissive, stating that they sell £60K worth of fuel a day and they'd had no other complaints. I then explained, that my 'boat' engine would be far more sensitive to such issues with sensors to alert the user. Cars would not. She then became a little more helpfull. She went on to explain that their tanks had various systems to stop any contaminated fuel getting through etc, etc.

Anyway, I told her I'd keep samples of anymore sludge that collects in the filter and let them have it. The issue is on record and she's notified an engineer.

Interestingly, she said that she'd had an RS Turbo and she wouldn't run it on supermarket fuel. Great.

I'd be stunned if they had that much water in thier tanks , unless you caught the tail end of one just before they filled it again. They shoudl have record of when they filled it / compared to when you were there. Sounds like it could have been much much worse . Hope they get you a new engine soon !

I emptied the tank this afternoon and found no more contamination. It would appear that the filters had caught all there was. I only change the filters once per season, without the filter sensor, i'd of run around with crap and water in the filters for the rest of the summer.

Our local Asda filled the petrol tanks with diesel and never noticed till cars stopped working!
Can't see the tanks having systems to check if the fuels contaminated, no fuel/oil tanks I've worked on have had such systems.

My mate owns 4 petrol stations and all they have are level sensors. The trouble happens when the garage lets it's tanks run too low.

He sells Texco fuel and despite us only being about 1hr from the refinery he can't BUY from Texaco for what Asda sell it at!!!

The same thing to a degree, one would think. Any water or crap mixed with water would be at the bottom of the tank.

Lol, not really, a level switch/transmitter will tell you the level in the tank, it won't tell you whats in the tank.
I think you'd need something to measure the SG of whats in the tank to determine whats in it, even then its only telling you what is in the tank at the sample point.

As you know I have had recent problems with fuel with my engine as explained in an earlier thread. Thankfully all sorted now it was a faulty diaphragm, but changed both filters as well. Anyway whilist in the process of the 'fix' I was advised two things that there seems to be a greater sulphur content to supermarked fuel and there has been recently some general problems with some of the fuel chemical 'mixes' in the wset of scotland causing problems with engines.

Didn't tesco have a problem some months ago with silicone in the petrol buggering up the sensors in newer cars ?

Luckily I fill the boat from Shell only( or water side stations in Yarmouth or Cowes- but who knows whats in there ! ) . The car however gets the cheapest diesel I can find on the basis of its a deisel - it'll be ok with pretty much anything.

I am starting to wonder if a mid season filter change is worth it & changing to a glass bowl type filter so I can physically see if there is water in it . Have this on one boat but not the other.
