Southampton Boat Show 2009

Well the weather was certainly kind today at Southampton - who wouldn't want to buy a boat when it's as sunny as this! As usual there was a mixture of the familiar and the unusual on show. Let's start with something newish . . .

1 Navatek prototype military RIB, built by ICE Marine using Lorne Campbell designed hull
2 Ullman bucket seats
3 Massive bow - you'd have to try very hard to sruff this!
4 Yes, that's triple 350 Verados!

Back to the warry-looking boats for a moment, with this Stormforce 1050 featuring some very substantial new suspension seats from Scotseats, and a couple of 300hp outboards.

Scorpion were there with two of their new 4 model "off the shelf" range - Sport (6.5m, Suzuki 140), Serket (8.5m, twin 200 Verado), Selene (9.75m, Yanmar 315 diesel), Sting (10m cabin RIB, twin Yanmar 315 diesels). With the Sport coming out at a shade under £50k it may be less expensive than previous Scorpions but it's still a pretty hefty entry level!

1 Newly relaunched 6.5m Sport
2 Super-stylish console on 8.5m Serket
3 Bolster helm seat featuring aft-facing bench seat
4 Probably about as much as most of us could afford!

RIBcraft were there in force, with boats all over the place (and more on the way too!).

The black and yellow 5.3 with carbon fibre console is for sale if anyone's interested.

Rib-X had two stands, one for their regular range and the other for their "Exige" custom yacht tenders.

The Zar RIBs don't seem quite so strange now that they've been around for a few years. Jimbo was driving a 5.3 on the Try-a-boat feature, and there was a 75 Plus on show in the marina. There's also a 9.7 on the way (but not in the UK yet), which manages to fit in a 4-berth cabin!

And a few more to finish with:

1 Ribquest looking smart
2 Ribshack shared ownership, now with Cobras as well as Ribeye
3 Superyacht-style Humber
4 Sealegs 6.1m and 7.1m
5 Valiant and Quicksilver representing the more realistic end of the market!

Thanks John, really wanted to go this year so good to see these photos'. You haven't by any chance got a shot of the bow (from the outside) of the one built by ICE have you?

Thanks for the report John, looks like you had a Fab day. Did you get a chance of some demo's?

I might well go at the end of nest week. Friday perhaps!

Nice job Paul

I saw the boat at the show yesterday.
Those tubes are tapered, and shaped in more than one plane.

Must have been a bugger to get right.

I went along today and had a mooch about... my wife an I were very tempted by the Fletcher range of boats (not RIBs), but over lunch we decided and agreed that in fact a RIB is so much more practical.

It surprised us how cheap motor boats are when compared to RIBs.

Nasher thanks for the comments on the tubes ,we were supplied with some good info and they were surprisingly easy to make without the aid of computer templating ,very time consuming but all in all a very good looking workboat
