Matt,

Theory's good, but I can see 2 possible problems:

1) those reflectors aren't legal for a trailer in the UK - you need triangle shaped ones for a trailer - where do you mount them?

2) You need to mount the number plate somewhere, which either means it needs to dangle below the end of one of your chassis rails (and get ripped off at the first sight of a sleeping policeman) or be mounted on a board between the chassis rails - so back to square 1......

I think you're still going to be easier with a board - if you want to stay legal.......

problem sorted<

the reflective bit is only a extra if you want it,anyway turn the lights upright so the trailor lights point to the middle.
Ive cut my plastic trailer board to 36 inches approx and moved the reflective triangle in with number plate central.
So whole trailor board sits underneath the outboard secured by 3 heavy duty bungee straps, a few benefits i just thought of cos im bored and finished for Xmas!!

fully visable number plate and reflectors
can remove just the light in unsecure places
Flexible reflective number plate
very bright lights all round
seconds to un-clip number plate board
cleaner than having to unravle a load of cable around the trailer chassis (especially in winter road salt-n-shit)

hope the above info will be usefull to someone!!

That's clever! I must admit my mind went down the "if you're gonna have to take something off....." route.

I get round it with an inline connector just inside the transom - most of the cable is in the boat, so stays relatively clean. Doesn't solve the "2m of manky plank" problem, which your removable midsection does!

Be interested to hear how they survive - i.e are they actually submersion - proof.

2m of manky plank

as the plate is transon hugging is misses out from getting manky!!
been using them for a couple of years, never had a problem, these new ones are trailer specific E:G they have a number plate light on, they also are very Bright!!

used a rubbolite rubber junc box under neath the winch for joining the two cables.

No - I was genuinely interested. Are the three all in one lamp/housing (is that legal?). I'd quite like to find the 'perfect' solution.

Another thought that ambled round my mind last night - With a bit of extra wiring and a bulgin (waterproof) connector on the console / frame, one of these on the back of the A- frame & you have a High level brake light.

Not sure how that would work legally tho' as the brake light would strictly speaking be on the load rather than the trailer.......

had to lend out my trailer light board to a neighbour last night as his wasent working ,and we got on the subject of led lights ,, he has heard that a few cars with normal bulbs are not compatable with leds when plugged in, as the bleeper or indicator warning light regesters as a fault and that he thinks led lights are not legal in the uk unless the car has been fitted with them in the first place though they are legal in some e.u countrys, dont know how right he is .

Lighting legislation last time I was involved some years ago was based on bulb wattage, as at that time filament bulbs were the only type going. I assume - but I don't know - that legislation must have changed as there is a prevelance of vehicles with led rear lamps now...Disco 4, for instance. On that basis, light output would be the parameter as opposed to power consumed.

I nearly went led trailer lights some time ago but wasn't sure if the (filament bulbed) Disco 3 would sense led trailer lights as a fault due to their low power consumption. In the end I sticked with filaments. Now I've got a Disco 4 I assume it's not a problem but I'm not planning on trying it anyway.

I read a load of stuff when I was looking at building a dedicated board form my SR trailer, and form memory it's all down to lux & position, no mention of wattage. Take as an "oldschool" example the difference between a halogen & a tungsten filament lamp.

as for lamp out detection, it wil depend how your car senses - the old current sensing relas wonlt stand a chance, whereas a software based current monitor will probably detect that something's happening out there....... One each side? That's crazy - you either have two indicators on your trailer or none at all (no trailer!).

Matt.

Been giving this some serious thought. Next question - how do you get lighting on the number plate, or have you arranged it so the 'plate lights on the trailer line up with it when it's installed?

Or, alternatively for about £1.62+VAT each, 2 off 25W, 6.8ohm resistor in parallel with your LEDs......
