Yamaha 100hp trim issue

A friend of mine has just bought an Avon 560 with this on the back. It's got an issue with the trim I'm trying to sort out. The engine tilts fine, until you tilt it all the way up. When it goes all the way up it refuses to come back down again. (Unless you release the emergency tilt screw) It's most odd!

Can anyone gives me any clues what could be going on here. I've made a short video of it: the first noise it trimming down, then up, then down again:

Have you checked the fluid level? If it's low the pump will cavitate and spin in foamed fluid at full tilt.

Haven't had a chance to have a proper look at anything yet. I did consider fluid level but assumed that if there wasn't enough in there it wouldn't have gone all the way up in the first place. Will have a tinker in the morning

deffo fluid level as you tilt up the cylinders are filling up and when the reservoir empties there is no fluid left for the pump to suck in to start the return trip Down.

your PISTON SHUTTER valve that allows the fluid to return is your PROBLEM . The valve is not coming off the seat . HAD alot of probs with this issue . I BET your engine is a F100A

Correct

Having looked through the paperwork for the boat this afternoon it would seem this engine has suffered with this problem several times before.

What's the fix for this?

yamaha f 100

the fix for this is to replace valves, the big screw at t bottom of t ram facing you and the other one is behind it , prop up t engine end loosen t trim unit and get it from t back, worked for me 4 years ago its a common fault, also keep an eye on your regulator they tend to overcharge and can set t engine on fire i have seen this on 2 engines , mine i had changed but it had melted, my friends went on fire but he saved it. good luck
