T/T Martini II - New SIB

Christmas came early for me this year

I'm just back from battling through the snow to pick up my new SIB and outboard from Black Dog Marine:

Zodiac Futura Commando 470
Mariner 50hp short shaft 2 stroke manual start/manual tilt

I must again say a huge thank you to Rob at Black Dog, always so helpful and knowledgeable, Rob did me such a fantastic deal on this lot I just couldn't say no But then that's always been my downfall

Looks really nice Matt, I can think of a couple of uses for your new boat straight away. That's a very short-looking short-shaft Mariner. What's the draft of the boat when the engine's down I wonder?

What a great looking outfit. Reminds me of the type of thing we used to use in the RNR in the 70's for the diving team. Huge fun and very capable.

Has Black Dog got another set??

Thanks, I'm sure you can! Assuming the cav plate ends up level with the keel then it'll only need the distance from there to the bottom of the skeg, probably 10" or so. With the motor tilted I reckon you could get that down to 5" or 6"

True, but I'll need to build a bigger RIB to carry it over on first! Meanwhile there's plenty of islets and caves etc to explore round here!

Steve, Rob's now a dealer for Avon/Zodiac Milpro, this one was built to order. But as well as his usual 10% discount for Ribnetters, he can get some really good deals from the factory. Worth having a chat with him if you're interested

Looks rather nice. And there'll be no fighting over who's going to have the navigator's seat on this one I see . I note you even laid out a rug to place it on... are you sure you're gonna want to get it wet? I hope that engine's going to have a few bolts holding it on and not just the thumb screws

I don't want to leave it out in the rain, I don't want to stand on the floorboards, the first person to moor alongside and tie on to my grab handles is probably going to get double-tapped

Recommended by Zodiac for anything over 10hp, highly recommended for anything over 25hp, so yeah, looks like I'll be drilling holes in my new boat soon

Couple of good dobs of Sika and tighten them screws nice and tight with a torque shear wrench. It'll be fine

Looks fantastic

Out of interest how rigid are the speed tubes, can they be pumped up with foot bellows

Hope to see you about in this next year, you'll be a right special agent blatting about in this and Martini II

Where do you plan on taking it, staying round Jersey, or going down to the Minquiers or something?

Surely if you fold it up and find a suitable mounting point for the engine then it will fit on Martini II (maybe with a smaller engine ~15hp?

Finally... I assume that if ur going to bolt the engine on that it will be trailered, you going to keep it in the water?

Thank you
Speed tubes are interconnected to the main tubes so they're the designed to be the same pressure.

Inflating the boat, trying to fit the floor, lugging the 50hp around, all way too much hassle. My first job is to design and build a DODO (drive on-drive off) trailer same as RNLI then she'll live at home on that.

The idea is to launch from the nearest point to destination, ie St. Catherine is 6 or 7 nm to the Ecrehous, town is 12nm to Minquiers, Greve de Lecq is 10nm to Sark.

The furthest I plan to go is Alderney which is around 30 nm from Jersey north coast, but I'll probably only do that once! Mostly its going to be for pottering around the Jersey coastline, getting close inshore, exploring caves and beaches etc.

Long term (in my dreams) the Zod will sit on the back of my diesel powered 10m homemade aluminium rib "a la Mach II"

Just shout if you need a safety boat That would be awesome if you did make that crossing though; bloody hard work and painful if you did - even if it was flat calm

ATB & have fun!

p.s. when is the first launch pencilled in for?

Spring tide by any chance?! I could well be available, unless it involves sibbing 40nm to MstM in which case I'll be washing my hair that weekend

It is a spring tide as it happens, but I wasn't thinking of MStM or Avranches or Pontaubault for that matter. No, the destination is top secret; mum's the word etc. I'll tell you next time I see you. Clue: it will appeal to your interest in the military. By the way Matt, you have less hair than I do so no excuses.

That's a wicked looking boat! Zodiac's always tweaking their designs. I see your speedtubes are placed quite a bit further outboard than mine. What's the Max. rated HP?
