compass
Looking for a decent compass for a very decent price.
Also looking for a working vhf and a chart plotter.
Working on literally no budget because I just got the boat done. Anyway gear does not need to be perfect but I need it working and not About to fall apart.
Let me know. Thanks
When I mean low budget I mean I can probably only afford the compass but at least I won't get turned around.

Looks great. Only thing I am wondering is what size it is? Trying to fill the gaping holes in my console. Either which way I am sure I can mount it somewhere else.

That hole looks like it's for a plastimo offshore.

If money is as tight as you say, a compass would be low in my list. Blank off the hole & spend your limited funds on a vhf or plotter.

VHF first maybe, but compass before plotter surely !
I have here a used M411 icom VHF £75, plus postage. It's a DSC set but will function without a GPS input perfectly well as a standard VHF.

Compass
Hi, iv'e got a plastimo offshore compass that would probably fill that hole, its pretty grubby looking as you can see, but i'm sure you could clean it up, it works fine and accurate.
you can have it for £20, + £5, postage, if any good to you.
Gerry.

Ya see I have a decent handheld VHF that I will use in the mean time. I might think about your set up. Is it possible to get the gps input later or does it take it from the chart plotter?

You can add it later, a feed from any GPS unit (plotter, combined fish finder / gps or stand alone GPS will send signal - but I ran the same unit on my last boat without any feed happily.
If funds are tight second hand VHF, combine dfish finer / gps and a cheap hand hold compass would be my way.
I carry one of these for back up - Silva Classic Compass | Cotswold Outdoor
as lets be honest, unless you are off shore you'll rarely need one.

compass
A compass is vastly overrated on a RIB IMHO

I just don't feel very nautical if I don't have a compass to take my bearings with. How am I supposed to impress my buddies when they come out with me if I cant say keep the boat on such and such bearing...
its more the fact that their is a gaping hole right in the middle of my console. I have a Garmin Fenix gps watch and I plan on using Navionics on my iPhone I just want something in case of heavy fog or battery failure.

So stick this in teh hole and have some where to keep your mug - https://www.vitamingrocer.co.uk/Cup-...oipBoC5P_w_wcB
and get a small hand held, no one takes bearings if just hooning about - there is no need.

I figure that Plastimo will work well and I can keep it for a long time. I guess I am OCD if there is a hole where a compass goes then a compass should go there. Probably should just re-coat the whole thing I just love compasses. and I will need one in the future once I start venturing further out. I also find them quite useful when heading home lots of fuel is wasted when on a wondering course.

If the compass fits, wear it!
I'd buy it and give it a blow over of matt black. IMO, a compass is a must have on a boat. Not just IMO really - they're standard equipment, up there with anchors and lifejackets. I think they're underrated - I use mine regularly (and I'm well tooled up with navigation kit). I'll often refer to it to establish what course I'm on and then maintain it - without looking down to examine plotters etc. If I hit a wee squall or mist obscures my destination, the compass will keep me right for a short time.
That said, you REALLY need to get a working fixed VHF into that RIB - a HH is nice to have but in my experience, of very limited use. If I was as skint as you claim to be, I'd buy the cheap compass to fill the hole and look for a Standard Horizon DSC VHF with built in GPS. It has a limited navigation facility - but if you take the time to plan and input waypoints in advance - it will get you home in the dark/fog/rain. It will also save your life in an emergency. Sterling is sh1t cheap ATM - do it!

I like the Idea of the Matte black was thinking something along those lines should clean up decently just now paid the man.
As far as chart plotters go I am at a loss never used them before. Some one on here was selling an rc530 but it seemed a bit obsolete? Are these old chart plotters worth going for even though they are around 10 years old?
That VHF you Mentioned seems like a nice set up. I suppose it would be that or a used chart plotter and a used fixed VHF. I keep looking around on here for good deals. The M411 seems like a good deal but again I am a noob at anything like these because most if not all of my boating experiences is around large harbors.
