Lathe
Before I put it up on ebay I’m wondering if anyone would be interested in my old Colchester lathe.
I’m in the process of getting something smaller and more modern so it has to go.
It’s served me well over the years but it’s huge and takes up loads of room.
It’s very old and was originally driven from the roof of a factory by belts, but I’ve added a 1/2HP single Phase motor on a frame bolted to the rear.
It’s 3 speed by changing the belt on the pulleys, and has a toolpost I made myself @15yrs ago with the intention of finding a proper one, but never did.
Screw cutting is by adding sets of gears on the end, and I have a selection of them.
I’ve made all sorts of things on it over the years and will be sorry to see it go.
I don’t have a clue what it’s worth, so perhaps somebody would like to suggest something.
The Bench grinder isn't included by the way.
Nasher.

yes I'd like that, I don't have many tools so it would be a good start for my shed, I can make a round one. Does it come with a treadle or is it water mill powered

And you think you're being funny.
It's that old it would have originally been powered by a steam engine and belts from a factory roof, just like you see in the old pictures.
When I put it together @15yrs ago I'm sure I saw a date of 1913 stamped on it, but haven't looked lately.
The 1/2HP motor has loads of torque and it takes 3/8 tool stock that I grind myself for various jobs. Can let you have some blanks to get you started.
Nasher.

A manufacture date of 1913 would make it the same age as Stu.

Nasher has just bought another Lathe and needs to get rid of t..his piece of history. I'm sure that who ever bought it would end up with something that would only appreciate in value

Tim
I’ve replaced it with one of these brought used from ebay.
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/pr...hes-milldrills
I know everyone will shoot me down in flames about it, but it’s surprisingly well built.
Crucially, for what I paid for it, including a whole load of extras, it will do what I need at a price I can afford.
Had I been able to invest a couple of grand, then obviously I’d have found a better lathe and separate mill. But unfortunately I don’t have that sort of money spare so will have to make do.
On the plus side, it has a much smaller footprint than the old Colchester, plus some additional features. I didn’t ever use the full length of the Colchester, so I won’t miss the extra length (Oeerr)
The smaller Nashers have wanted to learn to use the old lathe for a while now, but with the open belts etc I’ve been saying no, they’ll be fine to have a go on this.
The Milling head will be a bonus, but I’m not really expecting too much of it.
I’m going to make up a brace to clamp it in position better, then it will be a bit more useful.
It’s still in bits in the garage at the moment as I’m cleaning it down properly and waiting for the old Lathe to go so it can slot into position.
Ebay does appear to be a good source for Single Phase Lathes, where they are available for most budgets.
Looks like the Colchester has been sold by the way.
Nasher.
