Yes, but are you aware that you can use the standard transom mount transducer in combination with the structure scan transducer?

Fair enough.
£450 without transducer, £500 with transducer.

Does this need extra charts or is the basemap useable?

ie How does it compare with say the Garmin 551s?

Cheers,

Orve.

Dunno, never tried it
I'll try it later on if the rain holds off.
If it is useable, you will loose a lot of detail.

Basemap View

Checked the basemap on the very similar unit in the boat, and to be honest the basemap has so little detail it really is not useable.
The first picture is the basemap view of the western end of the Solent, with one of my tracks on, in the second I have tried to show the same area with my Navionics gold card in the machine. With the card in you can drill down to get a lot more detail than this view shows.
So no, not really a goer.

What sort of card does the HDS use?

Mapping Cards

The unit accepts MMC/SD cards.
From the Operations Manual "...numerous mapping options, including support for Navionics Platinum, Gold, HotMaps and high definition Fish'n chip electronic charts"
From the Lowrance web site, HDS 5 page, "Optional Navionics® Platinum+ and Platinum chartcards with TurboView™ for worldwide coverage - as well as Navionics® HotMaps™ Platinum, Lowrance Hot Spots® PRO and LakeMaster® ProMaps* (Americas)"
Whether it will accept other mapping cards I cannot say, others may know?
I use a Navionics Gold card.
