Would a complete lower unit for a longshaft 1999 50hp 4-stroke be compatible?
Go one here in immaculate condition.

if it is compatible, then theres an option there. i am going to look into getting it repaired if it can be, has it will be a cheaper option which would be appreciated at the mo. i know i shouldn't cut corners or drive into rocks in that case but if it is the only route to take i would be interested.
Big thanks Ark

Anyone in your area that does aluminium welding will be able to repair that but the problem will be damaging the seals in the gearbox.
I have one that had most of the cavitation plate snapped off one side. Bought a piece of 10mm sheet aluminium on ebay, shaped it to fit and got it welded by a firm that repairs cylinder heads for £40. Bit of work with the angle grinder, some flap wheels & a bit of paint it's invisible.
Unless you're able to keep it cool to stop heat damaging the internals you might have to strip the gearbox before you start the repair which could be the hard part !!
Good luck with it.

hi cptsideways
im not to sure a bigfoot would work, i only say this because i replaced the impeller in mine two months ago and the first one i got from the shop was for a bigfoot and was a bit thicker then the correct one i should have had.
but i will look into it, where peter when you need him. if it would fit its another option, i will get back to you.
big thanks Ark

Re getting it welded, you can pop the whole gear unit out the back, might be a bit stuck in but they do come out that way. Just one O ring seal too.

Thanks for looking out for me. thing is i need to find out what will fit, most of the ones i have looked at, look like they all would fit. my outboard is a 2004 model so not sure if the older blue band would fit. i think i will give a few outboard engineering shops a call and see if someone has the knowledge and can tell me the same outboard gearboxes that will fit from different models of mariner/mercury outboards.
big big thanks for your help and i post up what i can find out.
ark
ps same to all the rest of you's for your help and advice, big thanks

Merc/Mariner is interchangeable, the gearboxes have changed very little over the years
