outboard 40hp to 60hp cheap if pos
Hi all
Had a bit of a mission lately trying to get a outboard for the right price, been to london only to be let down, been waiting two weeks to pick up a 55hp mariner that now has a gearbox issue, my money is going down bit by bit and i dont have a great left, so please if you have something for a reasonable price please please get intouch, i will be looking on ebay and the boats and outboards site, but if you come across something you think may be a good bye please let me know, i only have around £600 and would like a electric start. i do already have a Mercury control box
big big thanks Matt

Reckon you've got your work cut out there. Mid-ranged outboards with power trim and tilt usually start at £800+. With your budget - you're looking at an old Mercury or Johnston. If you can up your budget - you're more likely to get something decent that will be easy to maintain (plenty parts) and won't let you down when you least expect it. Just my tuppence worth!

I'd stay away from the old Rudes. Strong motors from their ERA but had their day. I've an old Johnson 60 VRO (electric start power tilt with vro system) here going cheap but I'd not put any kind of warranty on it. I'd rather break it up to save the hassle.
Hold fire and something will crop up, especially as the Christmas madness comes and goes.

hi peter
the one thats on ebay for £800 or possible offer is a evinrude 50hp 2 stroke electric start with gas assisted tilt, with controls tank and warrenty for six months, that guy from down my way has a identical one for 850 which i was going to have a look at running on thursday to see how thay sound like, i belive its a 1993 model when you say ERA are you talking about older ones ( johnsons) ?.
I popped into rob perry marine today he has a 2001 mariner 50hp ept for 1500 i am quit tempted to get a small loan and go for this, are thay any good ?

I'd say it's a better option than the rude. By ERA I mean the entire Johnson/Evinrude VROo" models. From late 80's to late 90's they are ones to avoid.
That being said they are what they are. Solid motors of an age.

Without knowing that actual engine the 3 cylinder Mercury/Mariner range from 1995-2006 are decent motors. Plenty of them about for spares. It's the best engine you've mentioned so far but like I said each engine is only as good as its owner!!!

Don't know how your mechanical knowledge is, but one thing I found trying to PT both a Yam and a Merc is that at a high level, there is a statistically high chance the leg / gearbox etc will be shared with every lump up to abut 90Hp. This means that if you donlt mind a bit of retro fitting, more often thwan not you can remove the "manual tilt assist ram" and replace it with a PT unit from a gubbed other engine.
That makes it sound easy, and the actual swapping of components is. It's working out what bits you are looking for is the pain in the @rse. (although if you find a yam it's a dawdle as almost anything between 50 -90 seems to use the same midsection).
