I have strung a series of unwanted CD's onto a line which I then hang between the bow and the stern, draped over the A-frame.Theory is the CD's glint in the sun and vibrate in the breeze and keep the pesky things away.
No idea how well it works in comparison, but I feel better for doing something!

There has been a few bits in the recent PBO's on this theam.
CD's were mentioned as were over grown wind mills and other wind powered contraptions that span round with the wind so the guls couldn't land, monophiliment line spread about.
Starting to sound like a bluepeter special !

The owl approach at Datchet failed the seaguls just viewed it as a wind break!!

I still like the Jasper Carrott approach to moles when dealling with seagulls, blow their B** heads off!

b) CD,s - does not bother them
c) Rat poison - they just shit it out - stomach's are lined with thick lead!
d) Dipped bread in whiskey - they did get drunk - absolutely hilarious - that's about it.
e) Oh, and Alka Seltzer - people reckon they fly off and blow up - does not work

My retreat in Abersoch is just off the beach where I tend to suffer from Gulls landing on the Chalet roof in the early hours of the morning awaking me and the dragon with squawks and scratching feet rather than landing on the boat and making a mess.

One day, whilst watching a movie I picked up on the idea that birds are afraid of snakes.....hunting in my daughters playroom I found one of those plastic jobbies about 18 inches long. I threw it on the roof and awaited the result.

The very next morning all remained quiet as did the following day until that is, a bird of prey (don't know what) also spotted it and took it away.

Following a trip to Toys R Us where I bought an even meaner looking one, a trip on the roof with a nail or two - I've never been pestered since.......

I read somewhere on the net that oil rigs out in the Gulf of Texas were plagued for years with seagull sh*t destroying the paint, causing premature rust and corrosion. This was obviously a significant cost factor having to continually clean and re-paint the rig! After much research and various tried and tested methods nothing seemed to work. So, they caught one (a seagull) and recorded its screaming and screeching in distress. They then rigged an elaborate system of tannoys across the rigs and played the recording back at random intervals. The seagulls dispersed rapidly and stayed away for hours. Upon returning the process would be repeated and thus the problem was solved.
Now – cause I’m a sad bastard and seagulls seriously freak me out – I downloaded this *.wav file and took it to my rib. As the seagulls approached I cranked up the volume and played the ‘seagull in distress’ piece …………………………………………………………

MeMe - you better believe it - that's the first thing I tried - they landed right next my big rubber Cobra (now, no smart alec comments !!) and just sat and checked it out.
I believe they are going to start culling the bastards down Devon/Cornwall way.

I recall many years ago whilst sitting in New Brighton Baths (open air) a seagull shit -the biggest you've ever seen - landed right between the cleavage (I'd say tits but)...of my mum who was sat next to me. Funniest efin thing I've ever seen from that day to this - I was about 8 at the time.

I also recall whilst fishing off my pals boat a few years back he cast his line only to snag a greedy bas***d seagul, which, we had to land onboard before we could release it - funnier than my mothers tits when I think about it...

Anyway, music - good idea - guns, even better.

when you said how do you get rid of seagulls, my first reactioin was I heard they make reasonable anchors , but then the penny dropped.

On the way out of the Itchen to the big scary Solent, there is a pontoon known locally as the Pooh pontoon and normally the pooh barge is alonside downloading (brownloading?)

In the evening it is most interesting to observe a flock of seagulls sitting in the water alonside the pontoon and not on the boat where they used to be. The entire barge has had plastic carrier bags tied around the rigging at intervals of around a half metre
and to this point (about 8 weeks ) it's still effective
