Terry,
Welcome to ribnet!
I asusme your engine has a big hollow tube that it tilts / lifts round? (I ask because I have a 1972 Johson 25 that doesn't have that).
- Are you electric start? If not, almost any mechanical control will work. The innards all use the same mechanism, it's the box / paint job that is changed to suit the manufacturer)
Any set of "budget" morse / teleflex cables will work. Look at their website for sizing guide. You will also need the end fitting kit suitable for your engine. Usually only about £5. per kit.
Steering. Again the Teleflex / Morse websites are a good place to start. My original question about the toob is that it is where the bowden type stereering cables are fitted. If your engine is as old as my old Johnson, you will either need a separate transom bracket or some form of adaptor to anchor the cable to the engine.
Teleflex do a "low power" system, for which I have a spare steering wheel / gear, but you will need to order a cable as they are not a high volume sales item and my old cable has siezed.
So, where to buy?
I can do you a Teleflex "low power" (<50Hp) wheel, changed when I got the bigger engine. Make me an offer. (if you are where your info says I could maybe even drop it off or meet you somewhere).
I also have part share in an old (1970s) single lever + cables for a manual start engine (if your engine is as old as ours it will be "plug & play!) but will need to ask the co - owner whether we want to separate them from the engine or not. (I guess he would, as the engine is tiller fitted and we sold the hull last year). You will need to wire your own deadman switch tho'. Will be seeing the Co-owner tonight so can PM you with a yay / nay sometime after about 7pm.
If this is of no interest:
DA marine has a plethora of used kit. Depending what he's replaced recently may have used unseized cables too.
Other places that will be much of a muchness in price for new are (in no particular order)
Yampower (Yam do a basic "no electrics" box)
Bosun's Locker + the other one at PE I can't remember the name of!)
