I think it would have to be made of air to get that rig under 3500 kgs!

Hi all, to clarify, the trailer needs to be road legal to transport it to our base on the Isle of Mull (just trailer, no boat on it), then it will be used to recover the boat onto hard standing and may, sometimes be towed to our workshop (short distance by road) by either a Landrover or Tractor (dependent on weight and distance)

Yankee trailer
I'd be seriously looking at an american Ali trailer if I was you. You can pick one up in mint condition that will suit your requirements and the build is far superior than a UK trailer. Theyare light and have a hugh capacity. a 1 ton trailer usually carries 4.5 ton
EZ Loader Karavan are two makes that come to mind but there a quite a few others

Have you weighed your boat?
The only rig I have seen that can tow over 3500kgs legally is the trailer for the American Phantom which has air brakes and is towed by a 7.5 tonne truck, everything else needs an HGV unless someone knows better?
You might as well get a "yard trailer" such as an American one as suggested above delivered and use that locally only - it would be much cheaper than buying a 100% legal one you can't use legally with the boat on it IMHO!

Hi Cookee, the boat was weighed when it was delivered (on a trailer), it came in around 3.2 tonnes (boat and trailer) from memory (emptied of all coding kit, but did have a good 100 ltrs fuel still in the tank), can't remember what make of trailer or whether it was ali or not, however, it was towed with a landcruiser.
My plan is to tow it around the harbour with a landrover, if it needs to go further then it would probably be towed by a tractor.

My lovely trailer is made by Degraff and has a 5400 kg gross capacity but will only take a 4100kg load my boat is 2.9 tons so I hire a 7.5 ton tipper to tow it anywhere

If you are correct and the total weight of boat and trailer is 3200kg, then you will be perfectly legal on over run brakes.

Even behind a 7.5ton tipper you will be illegal, unless you have air brakes fitted and confirm to all the other rules regarding HGV trailers (which are far more stringent than for trailers upto 3500kg).

To clarify, the boat sitting on the trailer it was delivered on weighed in at a total of 3.2 tonnes, I'm pretty certain that the 'load' was well within the legal limit of 3.5 tonnes total weight.
So, has anyone got a trailer for sale?

I had a similar problem a few years back with a sports cruiser which was 3.4 tonnes on the trailer without any gear I bought a 2 axle streamline trailer (essex based i think)with bunks instead of rollers as they are lighter & 2 axle instead of 3 as the two axle trailer has a higher legal payload as its lighter
we did several long trips for holidays with this rig we carried as much gear in the landcruiser as we could and kept a weighbridge ticket for the boat & trailer in the glovebox in case we got stopped
imho triple axle trailers are more bother than they are worth numb to shunt around and 50% more brakes and bearings to fail after being dunked in the sea & you will have a bigger choice if looking for second hand

This is pricey and wont sell so I'd open a dialog and see if he'll take an offer of 2k which it is definitely worth. If this is a Degraff then it's the same model as my big trailer but I have pads instead of bunks.If you want a twin I think fillipflop on this forum might have a couple of 3.5 ton twins at his yard and he's a good guy to deal with.
Beamishken made a good case for a twin trailer but I love my triple axle cos the extra wheels really help keep the load steady But my 8.4 open Rib is a lot heavier than yours.
I have to be Honest and say that I would expect a 10m cabin rib to come in at more than the weight of yours but I guess I have been around heavy commercial Rib for too long.
I still think youd be better off with a Yankee Aloominum trailer.

Update
Got a trailer and thanks to Tony at Seafari.
Boat now at workshop and undergoing good clean, service and the fitting of some new toys.
For those interested, the total weight of boat (200 odd litres fuel still in tank but stripped of liferaft, anchors etc) and trailer was.......3.297 tonnes......within limit to pull with landrover but we used the tractor anyway!
