Wanted... +0.030" Pistons
It's worse than I thought.....
Finally got the cylinders bored. The only way today can improve is if someone happens to have a set of undamaged Merc Clamshell 60Hp +0.030" pistons going for a song.
I realise this is a bit like asking if anyone's got tomorrow's lottery numbers, but can anyone help?
(and before the flood of "that's going to cost more than it's worth - why not buy a new engine?" comments, I have two numbers: 60Hp, 83Kg)

Have you tried giving these boys a ring ? Pistons & Components, 5-7 Drum Brae Ave Edinburgh 0131-337-8559
I have used them in the past for classic car motors I have built in the past. Was not very good at it so was there quite a lot
They seam to be able to order in over sized stuff and random bits and bobs with out too much hassle. would be worth a try. you might even find a 2 stroke bike piston that would fit.
I don’t seam to remember them costing much?

mdt,
Not so sure that would work for a Merc? . Might work for a Yam or a Suz, but Merc (as far as I know) didn't make bikes.....
Andy,
Problem there is unless he's stripped it, and has taken a mic to it, chances are they'll rattle like the ones I have already. But yes, likewise I've never seen such a heap of dead engines
chewy,
I thought Barrus couldn't sell direct? Uncle Al has already been really helpful with various questions I've had on parts and is currently my preferred source for new as he was so helpful.
I guess I maybe wasn't as clear as I should have been. Engine is now bored to the max oversize Merc will make a piston for, so I can't afford to @rse this up, or I am looking at a new engine (and even if there was a +45 pistion, I'd like to be on the water next summer instead of rebuilding my boat again! Therfore "I think these are oversize" isn't an option. I guess I was dreaming that someone had recently bought the latest version oversize ones, rebuilt the engine, and promptly smashed the grearbox on a rock kind of thing.
Maybe I'm being fussy here, but can I add the caveat of "known history" to the request?
Alternatively I should probably just stop wasting time & phone Barrus.........

correct Merc did not make bikes... but all you need is for the bore and small end bush to be the same. and you might well be shocked at what might fit. As I said give them a try you only have a phone call to risk.

I see where you're coming from, but what about the fluid mechanics of the mix over the top of the "dam" & materials? If the microfiches on Ishop are anything to go by, Merc seemed to have about 6 goes at getting that piston right!

Have you got the serial number of the motor, and I'll see what I can find.

Unfortunately not, as both the disc & the sticker had dropped off whenI bought it.
I am told that all oversized pistons are backwards compatible tho', so the serial number should in theory be slightly irrelvant.
It's a mid 80s casing if that helps......

ish..... It's not the numebr I have been quoted, but does look like it's in the generic "piston" series of numbers. What does your book of words say that's for? (or is that what you have lying on a shelf?)

It actually supercedes to this.. 774-9137A14
No, don't have any laying around I'm afraid, thought I might have.
They retail at £116.52 + vat, but none in stock at Barrus.
As someone suggested earlier, Pro Marine is worth contacting, we use them and they're pretty good on prices and delivery.

That's the number I hoped you'd quote!
Shame. Not to worry.
