Wanting to buy small outboard for my dingy.

Hi guys I'm new to this so sorry if I get anything wrong.

Looking at the two engines below

http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ma...#photo-content

http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/su...ble/1020288802

Which one would be the best and anything I need to look for when I am buying?

Regards

James

Hi James & welcome to Ribnet. Somebody has to ask,
A/ What's it going on?
B/What do you want it to do?
C/ What have you got to spend ?

Cheers

Hi and thank you.

It's just for a small dingy and pottering up and down a river on a nice day.

£275 would probably be the most Iv got. Is the Suzuki look any good? Or is the mariner just as good?

I wouldn't pay any more than £100 for that mariner. It's old! The Suzuki looks better, but at the top end of what it's worth.

It is old, about 30 years. But they are bomb proof, very light (10kg) and run forever, thats why they regularly sell for well over £100, not sure I would pay £200 for it.

The Suzuki isnt a bad engine and its a lot newer, 10-15 years old.

But both of these run out of power very quickly, where do you want to use it and what boat is it going on ?

Have to agree with Samt. Everybody has their favourite manufacturer but they do look pricey!
There's loads on ebay at the moment to suit all pockets but the main thing to me when buying is condition & has it been serviced/flushed properly. Age might be a factor reflecting price but if something's been well looked after you'll soon tell if it's been abused.
Sadly I'm too far away for you to have a look but I have a nice shortshaft Mercury 4.5 on ebay at the moment that's mint condition yet was made in 1986 and is really well made starting at £150 !!!
Have a word with Peter at Boats & Outboards on here, he's really helpful & might point you in the right direction.
Generally the more you pay the more modern the engine. Tohatsu seem to be well thought of & personally I like Yamaha engines but can't afford the one I want yet............Always the way
What size dinghy & is it inflatable/air floor etc

where are you based? i have a 1 hour old mariner 4 stroke 5hp that i'll do a good deal on. it is still under warranty. it was commissioned in sept 2009. it is more than your budget but i'd do it for £500...no probs if it is no use, thought i'd throw it in ring as VERY difficult to get a good small engine surprisingly.

cheers

Out of the two go for the Suzi, its much newer.

We will have a 2006 Mariner 2.5hp 2 Stroke. Great little motors. It was going up at £295 but were open to an offer. Can arrange delivery for UK MAINLAND but I'd prefer collection

PM if interested

Thank you all for your replies. Have spoke to the chaps with the engines and they said they would take 150 for the marina and 275 for the Suzuki.

What do you think with them prices.?

It's for a small dingy and potter up and down the hamble for leisure.

I'm located in southampton so private message me if anyone has any for sale. My budget is 275-300 at a push!

Peter that sounds nice but your in Plymouth ain't you?

Regards

Just had another look James & the Suzuki's gone ! The Mariner looks very tatty which may indicate that it's not had a lot of tlc in its life & may or may not have been maintained as required !
I appreciate that you're on a budget but for @£35 these things get delivered on a regular basis !
It's a lot nicer having a shiny well maintained RELIABLE motor on the back of your boat & gives you a lot more confidence when you're pottering about !

Great, it should have its age on its CE just above the exhaust outlet. My guess is around 2002. Nice little motors. The beauty with them is they are so light and basic, no gears just start and go.

Best of luck with it. Post back some pictures once you've bought it
