Built an RC Rib

Over the winter months ive been keeping myself out of trouble by building an RC rib

Now that the sun is out weve been playing with it and boy can it shift!!!

Its loosely based on crusader, has an outboard and is self righting (which is essential for RC boaters!!!)

It can also double as an open rib

Its a tad faster and more stable but if you flip it then your going swimming. (which ive had to do allready)

Heres a wee video from the kyles of bute last weekend

Scary fast - scale hp must be close to 50,000hp to make it go that fast!!!

Wow, now all you need to do is scale it up by something like x30 and I suspect that you will be on to a winner

I've got before and after photos.

The tubes are pipe lagging from b&q glued on with zap epoxy.

The cab is made from a solid block of polystyrene so the boat self rights.

A bit of trial and error needed to make it go right but I think it's about there!

Whole boat cost £120!

Ok ok busted... No really it's for my lad.

He's only 8 and wants an RNLI RC. Tom's a lucky lad, he's had a few real life SIB's and a 12ft sorcerer speed boat with a Merc 25hp on foot throttle but I kept selling them all (as PeteM found out when he bought his Merc 25) so his thinking is I won't sell an RC from under him

Too be honest this boat has been pushed to the limit power wise and is getting rough round the edges. Barrel rolls at 25kts don't do it much good.

I'll see if I can get a production boat and modify it into an open rib. It will be much neater than this one and more reliable.

I have a nephew that is really taken with my RIB. He only gets to see it once a year so I was thinking about building him a RC model of it to play around with when he can't get in the real thing.

I been looking but so far haven't been able to find a suitable scale working outboard motor. I seem to remember that there were small electric outboard motors for boat toys when I was a kid, but so far I haven't been able to find one.
