Batteries under deck?

Locating batteries under deck is not the prefered design arrangment IMHO. Good design practice is to "have all electrical connections above the max. bilge level" In the case of a RIB this is horizontal center line of the tubes. The whole design concept of a rib is to remain operational if swamped. Please do not tell me that the under deck battery compartment will be waterproof.

Sorry but yes, the deck is totally watertight, no water can enter any compartment. The battery box will be watertight and enclosed in the console.

Most previous Carsons were built the same way, with the Hong Kong Police boats still in service twenty years on.

just out of interest, why did you choose plywood for stringers/ribs rather than foam and grp? Purely for strength?

Oh, and is it a ply deck bonded (how?) onto the framework and then flo-coated or do you have a seperate deck moulding?

plywood was specified by the customer to keep costs down, but we can do foam also.

The deck is plywood, bonded and screwed down wet. This makes a solid structure.

The deck is then sheathed and coated with a non-slip flo coat

Which is it?

Hi there, Pressman.
On a previous post you said the battery box is going to be under the deck and then in a follow up post you say it will be " in a watertight battery box in the console." Could you please clarify. I would be really interested in a watertight battery box, that obviously needs a non return out gassing valve. This is a great idea. Is this something you make yourself or can it be purchased ? and where ?
Regards, T.

Sorry for the confusion... It will be sited under the deck where the console is located. Does that make sense ?? It will be vented above the freeboard.

We manufacture this ourselves within the construction of the boat

I guess it will become clearer as the construction progresses

Is there some sort of a breather for the batterys, or will they end up underneath the consol.

I say that because being below decks if she gets swamped they'll need to be in a waterproof box.

Probably a stupid question but I ask plenty of them !

Yes there will be a breather from the box through the side of the console

The battery compartment is under the console as an integral part of the boat

All bulkheads are 3/4" ply with 1/2" deck, weight should be 350Kgs

Goretex battery vents.

Have just looked at an RTK606 built by VT Halmatic and they fit goretex battery vents to the battery enclosure. These will pass hydrogen but not water.

Hey presto - a non-return battery vent! Available from RS apparently and not expensive.

Looks like a nice console - especially the big wheel!!

What engine are you going to put on it, and do you get problems with the radio speaker so close to the compass?

Only a 13" wheel!! Re the compass we just get it swung usually a few degrees deviation. The engine is a Yamaha 150 fourstroke 07 model {injected)
