Close Encounters of the Shark Kind
Well folks I think we mentioned that we saw basking sharks off Ardnamurchan Point. Here's the proof...
It was a beautiful and calm day, the scenery was nothing short of spectacular. Karen shouted out 'sharks'!
Cyanide stopped and we had a huge basking shark about 5m long circling the boat. It even went right underneath us. We were very excited. I captured it on video and it looks great.
As we were watching 'our shark' Mike called on the radio saying they they had one by their boat as well. So over we went. Theirs was even bigger - about 6m.
It was the most amazing sight. Then it came right towards our boat. Karen put her underwater camera in the water and just started taking photos.
Here are the results.
Jaws approaches...

Karen keeps here nerve and as the Leviathon approaches she keeps her hands in the water and carries on shooting...

It came right alongside Cyanide and almost brushed Karen's hands. It was massive.
It was a truly awesome experience. These majestic and peacefull creatures, cruising about in the calm crystal clear water alongside the mountains, just going about their own business. The whole trip was worth just this one chance meeting in itself.
Now don't you wish that YOU had managed to come along...

I don't know who to be more in awe of - Keith for his amazing feat on the Pentland Firth (and his superb treatment of the arogant racing yachties) or Karen for the amazing pictures. I would have been walking on water by then to get away

Is this creature TOOOOO old, or did it try to eat something HARD, cause I don't see any teeth left in that abyssal mouth.

Nice on Keith, must have been your bacon butties that attracted 'em. I bet you were huddled up in the corner in the cabin protecting them eh?
But seriously that must have been an amazing experience, which like you said, justifies the trip on it's own.

Hi folks
A quick update on the pictures. All your kind comments have been passed on to Karen.
I have forwarded the photos to the Marine Conservation Society for their Basking Shark database. Here is part of their reply...
"Many thanks for sending in your basking shark sighting details, which have been added to our database, and also for the excellent photos. It is only rarely that we receive such good pictures and it was a pleasure to see them."
Here is their web site:

Keith,
We have a saying in Greece that goes like this:
"Better if your eye pops out, than a nickname sticks on"
