From Littlehampton UK to Tallinn Estonia

The Parker 900 Baltic , named Da Capo , which was shown at Ribex2006 and sold to our Estonian distributor Beta Group OY left today ie; 21 May at 7.30 AM on the first leg of its journey to Tallin Estonia. This first leg will take them to Dover where they will cross the English Channel and up the French, Belgium coast to the Dutch port of Ijmuiden. Here they will be met by Willem from Datema our Dutch distributor who has aready made necessary hotel arrangements. The next leg should take them to Cuxhaven then the following day via the Kiel Canal to the Baltic. Once they leave the Kiel Canal they will head for the Danish Island of Bornholm then up to Sweden and across the Baltic to Tallin. Further information and regular updates can be found on www.veel.ee

They arrived without any problems to Dover at 11.00 where they are now refulling and hoping to cross the Channel. Further reports to follow.

The Estonian web page www.veel.ee is covering their passage an updating on a regular basis
Unfortunately this web page is only in Estonian language. I have just sent them photos of the departure from Littlehampton and have asked them to post also in English. Anyway you can still view the photos

A couple of shots as they are leaving Littlehampton and as you can see the weather was not that bad.

We took the rib out yesterday and if the condition were the same this morning they would have for sure stayed in port. The Geckos with full face visor are great and for anyone cruising in bad conditions I highly recommend them

in the first picture you can just about see the rib in the distance

Andre,

Nice stuff, But forgive me if I'm wrong your it would appear that your boats are built in the UK and shipped to scandinavia. Hows does that work, surely an east European base would have been more cost effective.
Or are your boats built in Eastern Europe shipped to the UK and then sold overseas.
I ask this as you have an east European name so surely you must have some contacts in Eastern Europe. Maybe I'm missing something.

Anyway they look like nice boats.

Yes you are missing a lot but that's OK

Anyway we build the ribs in Poland and that particular rib was built for Ribex2006 . We then sold it to our Estonian distributor for delivery ex-Ribex 2006 as they wanted to drive it back to Estonia.
The new owner is a famous Estonian musician, hence the name of the rib
"Da Capo", who purchased the rib to ferry people and equipment to and from his island off Tallinn.
The passage from the UK to Estonia is sponsored by our Estonian distributor Padimees, The Estonian Lifeboat, Reval Maritime School and two other companies

The rib not only looks good but performes well

Great bit of seamanship in these conditions. Guess it's a confidence-giving craft Andre!

Yes you can say that even though the guys have very little ribbing experience

They are now in the Kiel Canal having earlier today experienced their first stuffing which fitted the rib. Helmsman's error as they say. Fortunately the elephant trunks were down so the water cleared away rapidly

Not bad from Littlehampton to the Kiel Canal in two days and rather bad weather conditions

Not so sure whether you have been following the passage on www.veel.ee but the rib is now in Ystadt Sweden having got there from Kiel.
On the web page there is an English section giving an account of the trip.

The main problem for them apart from the weather has been getting petrol so anybody thinking of a similar trip in the future - best have a diesel rib

Just found it! Thanks for the English version... your idea Andre?

If you enjoy following this journey, you would probably enjoy reading this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...639040-3718207

Yes it was cos not many of us speak Estonian. Got the book last year for Xmas from my mother but just have not had the time to read it only glanced throught it.
Our rib cruise to Poland 2 years ago in the cabin rib was nothing like this trip the Estonians are doing now. We had calm seas ect , shorts & T shirts all the way.
Also what not many of you know, ribs were new to these guys and I mean new. The same goes for tides they just could not get over the HW & LW at Littlehampton. There are no tides where they come from.

Looking at their post of this morning it seems they had very big sea yesterday and expect up to 5 mtrs today. see www.veel.ee

Just read on their web page that 11 miles west of the Tagamoisa peninsula the steering cable broke and they had to call for help. That is all I know . It is a great shame as they were already in Estonian waters having experienced bad weather all the way. I can only hope that they are safe and that the steering can be fixed so that under their own "steam" they can take the rib home.
