"Fun" off Start Point

Had a good run to Plymouth and back last Saturday in company with 36Valley.

Remembered to turn the Gopro on fro the return journey - although not properly angled / set up.

Pretty smooth day, but then I misjudged the waters off Start Point....had an interesting couple of minutes and needing some nifty throttle work to work through some rather confused seas. All good experience though.

Thanks for posting this. Camera always lessens the severity of the sea state but judging by the white caps it was about the same when I went by in May. Impossible to film by phone, I might get a Go-Pro. Was very hard on the boat and my knees that day, I've only got a bench seat.

Why do you think you misjudged? What would you have done different, go further out?

If it's lumpy I normally keep really close into to Start Point, and the coast which misses most of it even cutting inside Blackstone - as long as it's not low tide (which it was!).

The alternative is to go a long way out, remembering the race is to the East not the South!

I may have been lulled into false sense of security as the passage down and back - to that point - had been pretty smooth. It didn't look too bad -till I got into it! I'd also forgotten to check the tidal flows for that time of the tide -again because it was such a calm day.

t was 2 minutes of quite hard work on helm and throttle and a lot of concentration!

Despite all of that the boat was pretty dry, hardly any water came over the tubes.

It's the sort of sea Treerat would have enjoyed

One of us did run in close to the shore and got through it quicker.

The wind and tide were both from the East, so in theory it should've been reasonably smooth. I think what caused the confused sea was the swell coming from the West which was still running and had been for the previous few days.

It was a little livelier than the video shows

Definitely Treerat weather.

Some people have no sense of adventure

I'm not sure about quicker, you were way behind me having cut round inshore...I had to come back to find you

I think the wide angle nature of the Gopro always makes things look flatter that they are...the best indication is just how far up we were angled at times.

All good fun

Came across this footage LLT and it reminded me of this thread. Skillful handling to avoid stuffing. In fact check out this guy's other videos for some epic voyages to Ireland to Iceland. Maybe he went there for a fish pasty.

And then there's this one where it actually happened:

When we ran up through there in August it was the sort of sea I enjoy - not so sure Mr Sparks was as happy so didn't turn around for a 2nd bash.

But that place when it's running is a playground to enjoy
