Heading out to Catalina Island a 26 mile channel crossing
Heres a slidestory I did on our recent trip out to Catalina Island. I did this with my two brothers in the sr4. Its a 26 mile crossing. Conditions weren't ideal but we never felt in trouble.
http://www.slidestory.com/?page=detail&cid=30
Could someone across the pond who views this slidestory tell me if it views ok? Are there any sync problems? The site is still in Beta so small kinks still need to be worked out. Thanks

Boatster,
great shots; brought back a lot of memories of our trip there last year
However seems you made the right choice and stayed overnight. We came back in a small craft advisory state and although the boat was fine , the passengers suffered somewhat.(In fact whenever I get the charts out, the boys run for cover!)
Did you hike up and see the buffalo??
I have Ribnet members coming over in the summer,maybe we could meet up and do a channel run together;
cheers Dal

Been there once too - flew across from Long Beach in a single engined helicopter, just after I got my licence.
Never saw any of the infamous bison - did try the bison burgers at the airport thou!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad it was entertaining. That was one of the more fun trips I've taken to Catalina. I should do one on Avalon which is the tourist trap of Catalina. Its a great place for people watching but definitely not a secluded get away like Two Harbors.
Darrall,
We actually didn't go hiking too much around the island. We're going to get mountain biking licenses so we can really move about the island.
The next time you plan to cross the channel let me know and I'll run out there with you. It would be great to meet some rib.netters. Hopefully the sr5.4 would be done by then and I could cross with more cushion!

Catalina Seaplane
Not sure if it was a Catalina flying boat , but still pretty impressive! The one below made several landings in the Bay last October.Would have loved to be out there to photograph it(maybe next time).
But it got into a little trouble when a bilge pump failed and the plane started to take on water and tip.

It's an old Dornier - they all have a certain "look" about them - after a bit of Googling it's a DO24 to be exact.
In the link you posted it says one of the crewmembers is called "Iren Dornier" - strange or what!!!
I think these old seaplanes/flying boats are stunning - once was lucky enough to be given a trip in a restored Short Sunderland which was massive - flown by an amazing bloke called Dizzy Addicot - he was flying warbirds in his 80s - he died just before christmas in a car accident. He flew all sorts and used to be a test pilot - he flew in loads of films including Memphis Belle - a true gent!!!

Nice job with the pics and slideshow.
A few questions:
Where did you launch out of?
How much fuel did you end up burning on your trip?
How much was your room on the island?
Congrats;
jky

What about the flying fish? Did you see any when you went to Catalina Island? I hear there are alot of them around Catalina Island. Especially at night. They even have boat tours to see them. You shine a light at night and you can see alot of them flying, sometimes into the boat. Maybe it is just a seasonal thing.

i have done four trips from SD to carbo san lucas and two from panama to long beach. we did all our sailing around this area getting ready for the LA yacht race.
sorry to say its a dump the coast is full of nothing. the sharks are cool and the seals but there is no little bays, harbours. ever catalina islands are a mini LA mc donalds and all. were do you go on your rib from there? santa barbara?
