Just around the corner...
Ramsgate is just around the corner. Well, about 135 miles around the corner to be exact, but still around the corner!
Our weekend trip started from the great looking weather forecast - widely spaced isobars on the pressure chart promising low winds, and a great programme of events promised at the Ramsgate Powerboat Grand Prix. At least Ramsgate held true to the promises...
Now the problem is that whilst there's one "corner" to go round, there are several important headlands between Southampton and Ramsgate. From west to east, there's Selsey Bill, Beachey Head, Dungeness and South Foreland.

OK I've done some video, but there's more to come!
This first set of clips shows us leaving Southampton (Nice of Cunard to send the QE2 to send us off!) and then leaving the Solent in beautiful calm conditions with the accompanying RIB, "My Pleasure 2", to starboard . The shots with "My Pleasure 2" to our port side are going around Selsey Bill. In the last clip, observe carefully and guess what electronic device that RIB has fitted... (codprawn? )

I'll add some more clips tomorrow, maybe some music!

Nice vid Richard but you definately need a FGT style built in camera and hard drive thingy as seen on the 'whoops there go my strainers' Leviathon vid. In fact mebbe two - one on the A frame pointing forward and one on the console pointing back at the crew. Bit of editing and Bobs your mothers brother

NICE video - just wish you had put up a bigger(not longer)clip so the higher quality would do it justice - definitely your best filming so far!!! Practice makes perfect!!!
What electronic device??? Electronic hair!!!! Seriously though do you mean the RIB you were ON or the one you were filming??? Video quality not high enough to tell really - nice large plotter on the boat you were on - the other boat either had a radome fitted or possibly a cyclops radar reflector???

Cheers codprawn - I'm limited by the quality of the camera at the moment - just using my digital camera (Canon A40) in movie mode! The electronic device is on the other boat - the clue is the driver's position at the clip. And yes radar is fitted on the other boat (rude not to really, with a Raymarine system!). Our own chartplotter looks big enough until you start to us it in the way we did this weekend - 5" mono chartplotters aren't great for finding your way across unfamiliar areas with complex sandbanks as it's difficult to see which side of the depth contour line is the shallow side. Also had to turn off all the contours and screen text when we did race safety to see all the course waypoints clearly.
Alan, I think Mr FGT has some excellent video treats in store for you with the set-up he's planning for the next "oops my strainers work now" video, very similar to what you've described.

You can't see our chartplotter on that clip! What you see is a text-only GPS!
Nice one, 'eagle-eyes' Harry!
