Kentish Forts in a different light

Had a trip out this afternoon with Adam, and with the setting sun, watched the often photographed Maunsell forts take on a different light.
It was a most beautiful sunset.

Sunrise and sunset often give the best times for capturing an image, Please add your sunrise/set pictures.

Tim.

Awesome - look like something out of War of the Worlds. Wasn't there some talk of them preserving them for posterity? They definitely should!!!

If you look carefully at the third pic, you can see Mowlem Marine...
They have started a restoration project to open them up. A friend sent me an email link http://www.project-redsand.com/

Terrific pictures. I agree with Codprawn, looks like giant Aliens rising from the Ocean.

Is that a windmill farm on the horizon in pic 3?

Hi Tim,

Great pictures!
A bit off topic but have you ever tried fishing around the forts. It looks like it should be good. The reason I ask is that I am thinking about giving a go next season.

Cheers,

Tony

Yes. Its the Kentish Flats site. Several megawatt output. Quite a big site by all accounts.

Not personally, but judging by the number of fishermen that congregate there it probably is a very good site.

Thanks for all the comments. The forts do have a war of the worlds charm, which is probably why they want to restore them.

red sands and shivering sands

The forts are sometimes good sometimes not for fishing (like anything) but I used to see loads of guys out there when we ran tours out. The walkways that once connected them are basically wrapped around the legs and the sea life is amazing. One guy was rod fishing and pulled an amazing lobster out last season. They are very sound. red sands also has 2 periguin falcons during the summer and they buzz from gun tower 3 to the searchlight tower.
They are safe to navigate (steer clear of Shivering sands wreckage shown by the leg sticking up as it will have your boat!) and the shipping lanes add a bit of interest.
Redsands is the set under discussion, Robin Adcroft is very approachable and will always answer questions.
they are crown estates owned at present I believe and Robin is hoping to take over at some point. I loved doing tours out there and found them to be both striking and manacing. Quite something when viz is 30 meters and you pull up alongside.
Red sands is the one that says Mowlem has now been reinstated with this temp platform which enables mad people with KEYS to go aboard.
To be blown away do go further to Knock John which is the naval fort.
Looking farwards to spending another few hundred hours out there this year!
last year I took nearly a hundred groups out to see them.

They were featured in TV documentary not long ago . They showed a rib taking people out there who used to work on them .
One I remember was a DJ who used to work there when one was a base for a Pirate radio station .

Was that Mikes rib in the Tv program . ?

wartime forts

I expect someone will be along with better history than me ,
but they were wartime defenses wether they had guns or were just lookouts etc Iam not certain .
I believe the Army were stationed on them

Surely must have had guns on them

Great I love WW2 history , that search light tower must have been the scariest one to be one , there must have been some atacks on it , obviously unsucessful

Hi All,
Pictures seem to be generating quite a bit of interest, The Forts are about about 60 miles E of London, or 7 miles N of Whitstable and about 10 miles ESE of Southend in the Thames Estuary . Approx 51 28 N, 01 00 E.

There were around 250 men posted there for several months at a time, unable to leave and nowhere to go. -bit like a giant version of Big Brother, not my idea of fun.

Tim'mers.

thames Forts

built circa sept/1943.,
reason the germans were mining the thames and the authorities had no idea where the mines were originating from, remember these are not the tv floaty type but devious ones which were magnetic and lay on th sea bed until vessel overhead then bang etc.

built in 3 locations redsands and shivering sands were left post war but the others were dismantled.
water depth at redsands only 12/15 metres or so and th same on shivering sands.
They were built off site individually and towed down between two barges before being hand wiched to the sea bed. (the accuray is awe inspiring (i have some in line shots and will try to find)).
there were 1x control tower (mess and organisation),1x searchlight tower,4x 3.5 inch gun towers and1x bofors gun tower. (based on a land artillery set up.
Their job was to spot and plot enemy activities and to shoot down anything they could.
never directly attacked.
steel structures with sectional reinforced legs onto a steel support structure.

post war they were occupied until late 50s then literally abandoned, left every thing including service records ,generators etc onboard.
Army forts so army staff, but there were naval forts elewhere inthe thames.
the crew was 165 men and officers and by the war end it was 265.

theres loads more to them thats a potted history.
sorry about grammar and layout/spelling.

I would add they are so amazing to see its worth a run out but try and get them all in!! (anyone fancy a meeting in summer 2007?).

Thank you for that snippet Polwart. I see they used Bofor probably for anti aircraft which may explain why there were a few of them with small guns rather than one or two with larger guns.

Thanks,

Aidan
