Not a RIB but
Although Ribs are my chosen boating passion i thought I would stick up a few pics on the other boat I "play" on.
Its a White Shark, it belongs to Canterbury City Council.
It is used through the summer months to provide safety and rescue cover along the coastline controlled by the council.
It is an MCA resource and as such can be tasked to assist where needed within range.

is that the new boat that lives in the shed by the hampton slip at herne bay
if it is i hope they had a f**king icom fitted on this one has i spent 5 hours floating off herne bay until a RAF nimrod found me and the inshore RNLI atlantic 75 came to save me when i blew a SEAdoo XP up just by the forts
my mate had reported me missing to the guy at the ramp just as the old cream colour rescue boat was leaving the ramp and thay said i can,t talk to the boat to send them for me as he as no VHF and he had forgot his mobile number
the guy with the coast guard landrover shorted it all out with a arun class
the inshore 75 and the nimrod
top class RNLI guys And thanks to the RAF

ooppps!!
Yeah it is a new boat, about 18months or so old.
This is my first season on it.
Its all t bit slicker now, honest!
Yes it has an Icom fitted, M601 with dual station fitted and horn for hail and fog.
All the crew and ramp guy's all carry a VHF now on a private net.
Yes it does live at Hampton.
Another good reason why all jet skiers should carry a VHF!!!
We, Icom, are working hard to help the PWP (personal watercraft partnership) RNLI and MCA get the guys and girls to carry a VHF.

Nice looking boat Jon. I'm just wondering, as its a declared resource, how easy would it be to recover a casualty from the water with the high freeboard and guard rails ??

Well said Cork..... i was going to suggest exactly the same thing, surely a rib has to be the best close shore safety boat, trying to heave a 20 stone geeza like Dan TD5 up over those hard sides would be vertually impossible !

Very good question from you both!
Tucked down one side is, wot I can only call a crane!.
It locks in to the side of the boat.
The casualty is then winched into the boat.
This means almost no pressure on our backs!!
Like an most boats with guard rails, these can be removed or dropped as required.

Without getting into deep politics, I think you will find that its an Additional resouce and not declared as declared is 24/7 service and coded to rescue boat code.
As for freeboard, your right not the ideal safety boat neither for coming alongside another boat at sea as its "out fenders" time.
But its main role and what purchased for is to patrol our local waters enforcing the local bylaws.
Hope that makes it a bit clearer as to why they didnt go for a RIB.
Paul

Hi Paul
I like the idea of them "Enforcing local bylaw" yet i actually wait to see this happen, it seems that the scummy jet skiers can do whatever they like at whatever speed they like and no one stops them, I've been down there and seen the patrol boat moored by the slip way and three jet skiers come whizzing into the harbour, cut up a fishing boat and block the entire foot of the slipway, the patrol boat crew watched this happen and did absolutely nothing or said nothing to the jet skiers, ask the forshore services guys what they are doing to stop them speeding in the harbour, inside the 8 knot limit or clogging the bottom of the slip way at Herne Bay and they tell you NOTHING !! they have no power to do anything.
I'd be happy if they made the slipway permit only use and to obtain a permit you have to declare your insurance details to the local council, much the same as Margate, Birchington etc do.
As a local tax payer and active voter i'd like to see the rescue figures published about the local patrol boat, i read the local papers and actively follow the stories printed about the Whitstable RNLI activities and rescues along our coast, but i've yet to see or read anything about the council patrol boat having either rescued anyone or enforced the local bye laws.
The forshore services run small sibs along certain areas of the beaches at Tankerton and Herne Bay, and the RNLI cover cover off shore rescues, is it cost effective to be running an expensive patrol boat, which only operates from spring to autumn !

Ratty,
I do understand where you are coming from and i do agree with you, but cant afford to get into the politics of this(you never know whos on the forum). Only last weekend when i was just picking up our mooring on our hard boat (patrol boat just recovered and being washed down on slip) a jet ski came in with a skier behind it!! will ask what happened about it.
I also sit on the local water safety commitee and will pass your comments on to our chairman.
Paul
