I really don't understand why you put a 2-stroke racing engine on a leisure rib...??

Does a racing engine take more maintenace....use a lot more fuel, weigh more? I'm trying to understand why it's not more common

Racing engines tend to be lighter - especially as it's a 2 stroke. They don't use any more fuel than an equivelent 4 stroke at WOT....
I am trying to decide between the Mercury 300xs and the suzuki 300 4 stroke for next year. Yamaha v8 is too heavy - if only evinrude would bring out a 300 or more ETEC!!!

have to agree with you, my last few boats have all had merc race engines...ask yourself while bouncing over the waves...would you sooner have a weaker pleasure version or a stronger race version?

For everyone's information - the "racing" XS Optimax engines have shorter legs (the 200 can come in a 15") although the 250 and up come in a 20" - this means a lower transom. They also come with less technology (They don't come with instruments, a loom, an oil tank or anything!) than the regular Optimax range. The Offshore legs are much noisier than the regular one.
At least they use the same oil!
The offshore 15" leg is the only beefed up one and I've broken 3 saddles!
The 200 XS is a 2.5 litre and the consumer 200 is the larger 3 or 3.1 litre block with a longer leg and therefore heavier, but with more toque so it will suit a heavier boat much better ............. take your choice!

hi mate
was thinking about your bracket on transom and how its built in....
does the boat effectively have two transoms?? or is the outer(or added) bit the thick ply reinforced transom part only?? DOnt the rcd regs state a min transom height above water? if so how does that effect your design?
cheers gt

Hi gt, the boat only has one main transom, which is the outer part and a small inner transom between the tubes and the bracket. i posted a photo somewhere and i think it shows it quite well. the stringers run all the way through to the outer transom thick ply bit. (technical term)
as the bracket is part of the hull and not bolted on after, it is incredibly strong. As far as the RCD goes, it is complies to all requirements of CE, C-cat. Drop testing was a scary event!!
Cheers for the interest!

Ok thanks patriot. Ive seen some big ribs with outboards mounted on what effectively is a flat bathing platform and i was curious how they do it. Dont spose you got any build pics of it have you?
