A good article, although I didn't read it all, there is a correction I would like to make - he says that it will increase bow lift by moving the engine back - however if you lift the engine up it will actually decrease bow lift!

surely its individual to every hull and drivers desire! additional bow lift on my old boat would have made it even worse a nightmare in head sea!

I presume we are generalising and sayin more bow lift = more speed?!?

if not why design into a hull unless its proven to be needed???

Yes - generally more bow lift more speed - also much better handling downwind.

This is the reason setback and lifters are most used on raceboats! There are other benefits, we use one on our leisure boat for design reasons, and it gives us more room at the transom, of course the handling of our hull suits having a bracket as well!

our hull has been tested with and without the bracket, and the results have been very positive. we ran the 8.5 with a 275 verado, and an 8.0m with the same, the 8.5m reached 67mph and the 8.0m only 60. take of was noticeably quicker also, the prop has much cleaner water to bite with using the bracket.

Every hull is different, there is no guarantee that by wacking a bracket on the back is goin to make it better! it may go faster, but try throwing it into a tight turn!

I think its also a matter of personel preferance also, like with stepped hulls, they are not everyones cup of tea!

Hi cookee, well we were offered one at quite a good price, so we thought its not a bad engine to have lying around! we have both sportsmaster and standard legs for it. do you know anyone who might want a sportsmaster leg? its only done 3 hours

the engine isnt mounted high enough for the sportsmaster to have much effect though! i dont want another 200 thanks, however a pair would be nice on our 8.5!
What sort of speeds do you get out of the leisure bananashark? im thinkin quite alot more than ours!

When you say leg do you mean gearbox or complete midsection and saddle? The sportmaster gearboxes are popular with the racers - try boatmad.com, it's similar to here but for hard boats and race boats.

We get 60 mph from a 225 optimax and 65 mph from a Verado 250, the thing is the boat is very stable at those speeds.

Paul, the website is being prepared at the moment and the first "official" 8.5m is in production. It will be launched at RIBEX. it is the same hull as the 7.0m just longer and with a larger engine bracket.
