ok, some of you have seen my first rc rib and i was asked many times to do a build thread. So heres the second rib!
It started off as a standard boat called an Interceptor 650. I picked this as it has a similar hull design to the first rib and there are plenty of them about
It came with most of the electrics missing so i decided to stick some upgraded stuff in (15 turn motor for the rc people and Mtroniks ESC) It also came with a proper shocking prop so Ive upgraded the propshaft to a more meaty M4 one with a much bigger prop. it should be easier also to get a prop for this shaft rather than the toy spec standard one
Its new owner wanted a red rib so the best idea was too paint it before i installed the tubes
Now the hard stuff takes place. I offer up the heating insulation "sponson" and get a rough idea of the length i want it. The good thing about this stuff is that its cheap as chips so if you make an arse of cutting it, you just get another bit. I cut out a 90 degree portion and then offer it up to the boat to check fit etc
Using tape i mock up the boat. notice ive left the bow a bit long. This is so i can trim it down and carve it to the right shape. I do this for both sides individually. It doesnt have to be millimeter perfect as the glue will bond the 2 together later
Onto glueing. I use ZAP 5min and 30min 2 part epoxy. Its very expensive at 15 quid each but its definately the best stuff about. Its hard to take photos with fingers covered in glue but i firstly use the 5 minute zap to glue the Sponsons to top of the deck. then the nose of the sponsons together and i leave it for a good hour to set. i use the 5 minute here because i want them in the right position and the longer it takes the more likely youll get a saggy bit or something.
i then use the 30minute zap to glue the hull to the bottom of the sponsons. I just pull the sponson out and stick it in. the masking tape is to press the sponson onto the hull and to give it a nice shape and adhesion
As its F6 on the quay wall today and now raining too.....I got busy in the loft and dug a few toys out ....
How hard can it be ? Boat seems OK - pipe lagging ( have 5m so just enough) ...see what happens ! As long as I do the boat not the car I'm fine . I even found the receipt for the car - 27 march 1998 !
wow, not seen a celica as clean as that for a long time
The front of the tubes will be quite hard on a round bow like that, but i reckon if you put a third section straight on the front you could give it a genuine rib square nose!!!

Yep - that the plan . I'm thinking about how to get it to look like my little AVON.
Any way to paint the 'tubes' do you think ?
Wondering where to get some foam to be able to make it into a console etc ...hmmm - typical now the suns out I want to go use the real boat, but I'll take that over 60knt winds any day .
