Couldn't quite beleive the size of the new Yamaha 350 V8. Massive! Here is my mate Martin modelling it for us!

My God - I knew they were huge but......
Those Yams are totally pointless - they also do a 300hp version same size and weight - insane!!! As it is a 5.3L V8 why couldn't they have gone the other way and made it a 400 or even 500hp - it might be worth having then.

A man with the 350 Yam said it uses 35 gals an hour that real world figures
hows that for a carbon foot print.

Yes Roy I can confirm that figure However that was at full throttle (& 50 knts) & lets be honest - how often do we run a boat at full throttle? Like all engines if you run at say 75% full throttle the consumption figures drop dramatically.
Having said that my personal opinion is that a lighter 300 hp V6 engine will do the job just as well for 99.9% of the time.

Hi Ian
I said before that i don't think this V8 was designed for uk shores
its a replacement for big inboards in north America
it dose look awesome though.
but just how much better is it than a 300 Verado or even my puny 250 Yamaha

I still don't think they are a good idea - and the 300hp is bonkers when you can get say a Suzuki - same horsepower - 1/2 the weight and 1/2 the price!!!
I would prefer your "puny" Yamaha!!!
if you really want a laugh compare the Yam 300 to the optimax 300xs - 365kg v 235kg - 130kg or in old money 286lbs difference!!!

Ahleyd, was that you that was driving the Scorpion 8.75 with the F350 yamaha? I didn't catch your name at the show. We sure did enjoy the run out on the Scorpion! Always blown away by the smoothe ride of the Scorpion. Couldn't beleive we were seeing 53 knots on the plotter, 4 up and it was still rock steady stable! Unreal. My boat chines from tube to tube at that speed! A Big thank you for taking us out for a run, much appreciated
Codprawn, you can't deny that the F350 pushing a nearly 9 metre rib to 53knots is impressive?

Yes I can!!!
An engine that size and weight should be more like 400 or even 500hp. The only 350 I would fit would be the new Verado. In fact a light 300 would prob give about the same performance. Rumour has it that the Optimax 300xs actually develops almost 330 anyway!!!

Codprawn, I was also very sceptical of the Yamaha F350 going to the show, I personally wouldn't have one. (Its too big & heavy for my boat) also it has to win some sort of prize for being the ugliest outboard ever created? But having been out for a run it definately delivers the goods on performance. I'd take the Suzuki DF300 if i had a pocket full of cash. Doesn't the 300 optimax only burn high octane gas?
Later

Hi,
You wanted some photos of the Avon 850:
http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n...venture%20850/
There's several here. Haven't sorted them yet, just took loads for reference purposes. Would be interested to hear what you think. We built the boat for the show. Handles and performs like a 620, unlike some of the other 8 metre RIBs that are a bit tame. It has a massively deep V and a nice raised bow, although conditions were never really rough enough to push it to it's limits!
With regards to the 300 and 350 engine, as mentioned it was originally designed for the US market and has been hugely popular over there, they of course prefer the big block V8's to the higher reving 6 cylinders. The V8 has masses of torque and is an amazing engine. It is thirsty flat out, I managed 135 litres per hour, but it's pretty good at cruising speed as it's not working too hard. We had one on our Cobra 8.6 demo boat for quite a while and it was an awesome engine. We've sold quite a few and are happy to see some good brands like Scorpion, Avon, Cobra and others like Grady White etc. are fitting more and more. PS. I don't think it's ugly at all!
