RIBnetter in the Antarctic
Those of you who have met me over the years, or seen my logs on here, will be familiar with my friend "donegaldan". We've clocked up big miles and adventures over the past decade - on the water, under the water, overland and underground. Now his sense of adventure has taken him that bit further. Actually, you can't go much further, unless you have contacts in the space industry
On Sunday past, he flew into Rothera Station, British Antarctic Territory to begin his 17 month stint as Wintering Communications Manager. All those who've met him in Flying Test Monkey guise will be unsurprised - we all knew he was going to go far - maybe just not quite that far...
For those who want to see a bit more, his blog is here: Linky
He took this pic on final approach to the base.
P.S. Hey, my 10,000th post! Glad I didn't waste it like the other 9,999

He told me it was the furthest he could get from you and was looking forward to the peace!

If you mean the Bonner Marine Lab then the bizarre doesn't end there - apparently donegaldan's cousin has been running it for a few seasons...

Well done that man - if you wanted a rugged environment to ace the North West Coast of Ireland that's as a good a place to go
"Dan of the Antarctic" - in this case it has a certain ring to it i.e. if the cap fits - wear it"

Dunno. My mobile rang at 2100 yesterday - the display said "CAMBRIDGE" but the call originated in Antarctica, routed as datacomms via a geostationary satellite to BAS HQ in Cambridge - where it jumped the fence onto the British Telecom network and then onwards to my mobile.
'Twas donegaldan. He's in good tune and said to say "'Que pasa?" to those on here that know him...

He mentioned that the mother of one of his colleagues in Rothera works for Tony Hill (Seafari Oban). Small world indeed!
