Ask for my wife's help in holding things in place whilst cable tied the basic structure and she said it was to cold, so she said do it in the dining room, making sure we had good ventalation, central heating on but some doors and windows open, 2 big dust sheets, big sheet of MDF and that was our work service for 3 weeks, wife's idea, quite lucky I suppose.

She started grumbling in 2nd week though, but to late then.

You have done a great job, I also have bought an MOD 5.4. I am having great difficulty removing all the raised deck area for the console and fuel tanks.

Did you sand it all down??? did you use any other tools, mines got the non slip deck added its eating my sanding paper and costing.

I've been looking at that area on the searider and If I was to do it I would be tempted to buy a prefabricated consol (I can't make one), and cut out the shape of the floor at each end of the consol to make it sit flat.

As Roguewave said Avon didn't make that good a job of the inside of Navy Seariders.

They do make some good ones though, I just can't find where to get them, They have two individual seats lots of hatches and hydraulic steering. Its a little secret I want to keep to myself until I get my next boat sorted.

nos you have been useful tonight.

Ive already bought a large console that is fitted to the XS[IMG] ribs + a double jockey with all there stainless bits, thats why i want a flat floor.

Im also painting hull and deck white with 2 pack paint, i am also going to attempt to remove all the MOD pockets and extra straps that were added, hair dryers going to get a lot of action..

NO FEAR

Max HP for 5.4 searider is 90HP, there are a few with Yam 115hp's on. Max weight for transom is 175kg but when i rang Avon for advise i was told NO,NO,NO the extra power will not overall make a massive difference, its probly like putting a porsche engine in a beetle and forgetting to do the brakes and suspension.

I have got a 90hp Yamaha coming after considering 115hp but the only use a larger engine would have would be say for diver application i.e getting the thing out the water with a full compliment.

I would imaging avon know what they are talking about.i have seen several seariders and they are always well built and think to myself the transomes should be able to take a larger engine so wondered why you see them with moderate hp engines on.Thanks.The other reason for asking was having bought a new 150hp my intension was to transfer when funds permitted to a more sea going hull(as mine is a sports boat)and would have seriuosly considered the 5.4 searider as a project.Oh well have to think again ???Thought your doing a grand job.

Although a Searider owner and liker of said boat. I would like to add my two pennance worth with regards the 5.4 Meter Transom. To my untrained eye the transom doesn't look as well made as a lot of other RIBs that I've seen. Most of the 5.4 meter transoms, end up being reinforced with extra bits of ply and quite often large lumps of stainless steel plating. To me that shows that most owners also see them as being a bit flimsy. Maybe Avon know this and thats why they keep the size of the engine down.

I spoke to Duncan "searider" and I'm sure he said that on his old hull the plate said max 115 hp? but I'd check with him

As for reinforcement my 4.2 has had the transom beefed up with an ali plate shaped like a "C" section that slides on from the top and I've bolted my aframe through it to and fitted some brackets to the hull

Yes indeed, my plate for the 5.4m did say 115hp. However, my boat was ancient and it was probably 115 1970s horses (Measured at the crank and not the prop as well!)

I reckon 90hp is plenty. The 5.4m is quite a small boat for its numerical size. The hull is narrow - which is partly why they ride so well, and when I was measuring up for a trailer found that the hull is not much more than about 4.2m long.
Would not recommend putting too much weight on the transom - not because of the strength but because of freeboard. They do sit low at the stern.

It's also a light boat - about 500kg. Mine on its trailer including engine and all normal gear was less than 750kg when put on a weighbridge.
Acceleration with a 90hp on a SR5.4 is better than with a 150hp on my Scorpion.

Regarding the transom strength I think the reason that so many are reinforced by their owners is because the plywood has degraded - many are now 30 years old.

Reinforcing a transom is something that can easily (and cheaply) be done by an owner.

My transom went soft but I bit the bullet and had the old one cut out and a new one fitted - cost me £1200 though
Bolting on a few stainless bits would have been much cheaper but I did not consider that to be a "proper" and "permanent" repair that would preserve the value of the boat.

As built the transoms are fine but plywood does not last forever.

Regarding consoles if anyone is looking to do the same as Narcosis but can't be arsed with making a console, mine had an outhill console of the same type that Avon fit to the D560. Fitted fine and you can get a 100 litre tank inside it.

My MOD SR 5.4 also has a beefed up transom with extra metal, i got the impression that most had strengthning bars from floor to transom.

However Avon were suggesting a 115hp added 4-5 knots on standard prop but made the boat unstable i guess they would know as these things were tested to death by the MOD and are designed to take a full compliment of up to 10 bods, one assumes if they could safely throw a 115hp on the back they would of.

As 115 Yam's are as cheap as 90hp yam's it seemed logical to want bigger. But my minds made up after lots and lots of questions

I have seen a 150HP on the back of a 5.4m and speaking to the owner he thought he got 65 knots out of it.. Anyone who has chine walking at 45 knots with a 90 on the back will probably agree 150hp would be insane especially if you intend to go in the rough stuff. Incidentally all the MOD seariders carried on ships were stripped of their 90's and replaced with 75's as the Navy can't drive boats and kept flipping them!!
MOD police boats still have 90's on.
90 2 stroke yamaha is the way to go.. or twin 40's as that can be fun....

Some do. I used a couple recently with 75 Mariners on the back and they drove just like my 4 meter SR with its 50 on the back.
