for the trooper - had my 3.1 swb for ten years and still dont want to change it. bags of torque, ultra reliable and an amazing turning circle. i see your navara had a new engine like so many others. shit con rod bolts!

The D22 engine in the Mk1 Navara was indeed crap. Nowt like a con rod through your engine casing to ruin your day but then again they were Renault engines so I blame the French

Nissan had an ultra reliable engine in the 2.7 and 3.0 litre TDi's, then Renault got involved.
The D40 in the Mk2 Navara seems fine though.
Wife's Micra has a Renault engine in it. Chain driven, but being a Renault chain it stretches, requiring an engine strip out to replace. So far hers has been fine but quite a few others haven't.

Oh dear, I seem to have trodden on the feet of landy lovers!! The best way of taking the spotlight of your vehicles inadequecies is to try and highlight the weakpoints of others.

I will don my flame proof suit in preparation for the responses.

I did not hide any details it's all there warts and all and still IMHO, a far superior machine.

As I said; I would love to buy british but they are just not for me. I have lots of friends and family who have suffered with said vehicles. I have seen through the construction industry many other poor examples of workmanship and bad design. In their day they were the best but I am afraid all your paying for now is the brand name at a marked up price. Saying that; each to their own and as long as it tows your boat thats all you want then it's up to you.

My Navara; the engine went at 60K it was out of action for 3 days, the company paid for the new engine and I was cooking on gas again. Other than that one episode it never gave me a spot of bother. I took it from one end of the country to the other (literally), to Norway and elsewhere on the continent. At work it was great no bother on site and I even drove it onto the top of a demolished building, (just wish I had a camera with me). I really threw it around with no regards and it was fantastic, If I had the cash spare then I would have another one tomorrow.

The trooper.
Since the Navara, I have bought second hand troopers for my towing vehicles. All e bay specials. The first trooper the cluch went at 197k, as it was second hand I cannot comment on when the clutch was put in, but the cost of a new cluch there would be no change from £500. I only paid £550 for the thing to start with. I scrapped it and got £350 back (it was a short wheel base), then I went on E bay and got a long wheel base japanese import (Bighorn) it has the irmscher body kit with recaro heated seats etc all for the grand price of £450. I have to admit it aint pretty but it is a good strong solid vehicle.

Same for the other cars in our household, Suzuki swift (I get between 50 - 60 MPG) and the missus has a SWB Vitara. And our Bikes 2 Hondas and a Suzuki.

Sorry guys, it's the far east every time for me.

I very good mate had one, and it was crap, really gutless, and always having problems. He had a steep(ish) driveway to a paddock, and whenever he needed something taking up there he asked me to take it in my 1.6l Daihatsu F20V (which was the fore runner to the Fourtrack) He hated the Maverick, and in the end pretty much gave it away!

That was before I rolled the F20V.

Didn't 'hate' ours. It was just that there was nothing to fall in love with as they were crude, noisy, gutless and problematic (forgot to mention windows that went down then wouldn't go up). Souless, too. About as much character as a twin tub.

Just beware Nissans with Diesel Particulate Filter Systems.....I'm having terrible problems with my X-Trail which apparrantly has become "clogged" and Nissan are telling I need a new one at £2400 fitted!

Considering that the risk of particle build up should only affect cars doing short urban trips where the engine doesn't reach op temp, and mine spends it life doing long motorway runs (80k miles in 3 years) this problem shouldn't ever have occurred.

Problem first appeared at 53k miles and Nissan refused to consider it was a warranty issue them & I've been fighting them for over a year and 5 trips into the the garage. They nowe say car's out of warranty so nothing they'll do.

Won't be buying another one - shame at it's a good vehicle to drive!
