cool pics!! i went on the Aurora couple of weeks ago, look at these engines, 4 x V14 MAN diesels to power two massive electric motors! (the green ones) total hp 75000, you can see the propshafts on the right of the green motor, the shaft speed is 124 RPM and The diesel generators run at 600 rpm !!

on the picture of the QM2 : are propulsion units directional?
ie as it looks the props pull but there seems to be no rudders.
if they are directional then i take it she came dynamic stabilise and go in all directions?
awesome size though

IPS Drive
I think, They are based on teh same idea as Volvos new drive. I think its called the IPS drive. Itis based on the idea of the screw getting water that has not passed over back of gear box and thus is more efficient.
It pulls the boat in direction pointed. I suppose you have indepenent Port and Starboard for manouverability.

As suggested the props do pull. a lot of big ships are going for this system as the props are more efficient in this direction with undisturbed water coming into them. Have you ever soon a plane with its props at the back of the fusalage or wings?
The front two pods are fixed and the back two can turn to steer the boat. I think they turn independant of each other. Its all computer controled.
When she comes and berths in southampton she very rarely needs tugs as see can move sideways by turning the pods and using the bowthrusters.
I remember when she left for her maiden voyage. We went out in a rib from work to watch her and the fireworks. It looked huge from close up!
She left her berth sideways and then reversed unnassisted about half a mile up to mayflower park and then held station exactly for approx 20 minutes for the fireworks. She did all this with the wind blowing a f4 - 5 on the beam. Its amazing what a computer can do when you press the right buttons in the right order!!! Why can't they fit these systems to all boats and just give you a joystick to drive with?
After the firewoks she set off down southampton water. The acceleration on it was awesome when the opened it up after passing hythe pier.

Yes they are a slightly large version of the volvo's.
On the volvo stand at southampton boat show they had a simulator of this system it looked great. I had a play with it.
You get a wheel and throtle sticks for normal driving and then when it comes to berthing etc you then use a joystick to move the boat in any direction and twist it to make the boat turn in any direction on the spot. You can also make it turn while moving sideways, forwards or backwards etc to counteract tide etc. was a piece of cake to get used to and use. Speaking to people who have used the real thing the simulator is just like it. Very impressive.

LOL - no Big Brothel here I'm afraid, although I heard a replica of Jade goody's mouth is going to be used on Cunards new ship 'Victoria' as a fog horn, apparently five blasts has been replaced with 'GET THE F*** OUT MY WAY'
I read somewhere when I found that pic that the two rear units on the QM2 (made by Rolls-Royce and called Mermaids) are multi-directional and are capable of 360 degree rotation, the front two are fixed.
In that pic of Aurora, above, it says 'AEG' on the side of it - don't they make white appliances? Never seen any big green fridges like that in Currys?
Here's another interesting size comparison...
