Cheers Dave. I'm tryting to get things done, but there is so much to do at the moment....went to the beach today, and off mountain biking in the alps next week The hull is a shakespeare 520 sports RIB, contact stevetheboat on this forum for more info.
After a visit to see Leeway about the console (and to check out his impressive looking new RIB), I may try and make it from scratch (due to various issues, one being time constraints). The present plan is to make a "plug" that will act as a male mould. Then layup around the outside of this, break out the mould from the inside when the glass has gone off, then flow coat the outside folowed by lots of rubbing down to get a glossy finish.
Does anyone see any problems with this? The only issues I can see are having trouble removing the mould from the inside. What would be the best form of release system to use? I thought about perhaps using double sided tape to stick peel ply to the outside surface of the male mould.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers
Tim

Ok, maybe too much blue peter
Plan has changed. I am now (unless someone can think of a good reason why not) going to make the console shape out of 12mm thick polyurethane foam panels. This will mean I can easily sand the corners to form nice curves. I will layup 2 layers of 300gsm woven roving on inside and out followed by one layer of 600gsm CSM inside and out. The outside will then have some tissue applied to it followed by lots of flow coat and then a load of sanding and buffing. This will hopefully give me a very stiff structure with the added bonus of being lightweight. I will bond in plywood inserts for the bottom flange and dash board to give a suitable surface to screw into.
Leslie the Tube lady came round today and has told me what preparation I need to do before she helps me do the crucial sticking down of the tubes. 5 hours work she reckons then I will stick rubbing strake, handles and hypalon flanges myself.
Pictures to come shortly.
Tim

Pics
Ok, here are some pics of Mike and I building our cardboard console mock-up. Lots of parcel tape, lots of cardboard and lots of bodging! Photos show different stages.
This design is not finalised, I'm going to tweak a few things before I make the final one. The smaller footprint allows it to fit as far up front as possible and this should allow me to get two side by side single pods in and a bench behind. We had to tweak it a bit to get some room either side of the console to walk to the front.

A couple more pics of the console. The sticky outy bit on the right will allow me to mount my side throttle in the middle. I'm going to tweak the left hand side so it doesn't look so weird. Also going to lengthen it slightly and make the top more sloping and sleek looking.
The last two pics are our way of pressing the tubes flat onto the hull flange so we can draw around with a chinograph pencil. Works like a treat.

Tell me to "butt out" if you've already thought of this...but... have you marked out/checked where the end of the under-deck trunking comes to? If your console is well forward, you may want to check this out. Steve should be able to give you the details

Certainly won't tell you to butt out jono, all comments/suggestions good or bad welcome! Thanks, but its all sorted. It happens to be one of the things I have thought of amongst a field of things I haven't and have yet to find out! The trunking I believe it 216cm long , which gives me enough room inside the console to thread the cables between the rear console wall and the fuel tank!
Off into town now to get a chinograph pencil...

Tell me to butt out also if you wish coz I am certainly not an expert, but make sure that where you mount the intruments can easily be seen standing up or sitting down,a lot of consoles seem to provide too much of a vertical face too close to the helm when standing up in my opinion.

Good point Paul & thanks, I have taken this into account to some extent, but one of my tweaks will be to make the dash a little shallower.
Marked out the position of the flange on the tube today. Tomorrow I will start to cut the strips out I think and think about ordering some bits and bobs.

Latest update
Right, after lots of hard work with rubbing down, we fitted the tube today. A couple of scary moments but all sounds as a pound in the end. She looks great.
Need to stick the strip along the bottom, tidy up the transom, stick on the rubbing strake and the handles, then the tube it completely finished.
Next week will be console work and mounting the engine.
Some pics:
5. Rubbing down in the sun
1. Strips being glued and general prep
2. Strips in position (inner one folded over to provide "give")
3. Close up of transom
4. Laying plastic over the wet glue on the strips

Some more...
1. Sticking down the first side...no turning back now
2. There was lots of pumping
3. Cleaning off the inside and generally farting about
4. Sticking down the last structural bits at the back
5. All finished! (apart from all that stuff I said above )
Now best hope that glue holds

Can someone please give me some exact details of how I polish this stainless up? Can I get a spinny head thing to put on a drill? If so how much and where from!?

Louise, yes, although I haven't managed to get all that much done, getting the tube on kinda makes me feel like its nearly finished! Its a big step as it actually looks like a boat!
