Thanksgiving Cruise....
We had a beautiful long weekend here in Canada, so we took advantage of it and headed out on a cruise across Georgian Bay from Tobermory to Killarney.
The distance across the bay is about 52 miles, and we logged a total of about 155 miles with some side trips. A few pics...
We stopped at Club Island to stretch and run the dogs. This island had a small copper mine early in the 19th century... Apparently the smelters came from Swansea, Cod!
The harbour is very secure... and in the summer, sailors often spend the night here.
A pile of tailings from the mine.
Cheap SIB if anyone is available... needs a little work!

The approach to the Village of Killarney, 52 miles from Tobermory...
The welcome sign!
The "main street"... a major geological fracture known as the Grenville Front passes along all of northern Georgian Bay, up through Labrador into Greenland. Supposedy it was formed when the continents were floating around a few gazillion years ago...
The other good way to get around this area!
Ya gotta love any town where the Liquor Store has a dock!

A few more...
Killarney is famous for its Fish and Chips... caught in the morning, served at lunch... from a school bus!
We managed two stops... perch, pickeral, whitefish, laketrout... You're never sure what you'll get!
Our campsite for two nights... named Crybaby Bay... when Mrs. Stoo dropped a bottle of wine. Granite beats glass every time... Note backup bottle of wine held securely. She's not stupid.
Mrs. Stoo works on her Ph.D.... only two years to go!
Safe anchorage for the night... we could hear wolves at night, and see the Northern Lights!

And finally...
The fall colours are in full bloom...
Collins Inlet... more of that big crack. It runs about 12 miles here, separating Philip Edward Island from the mainland.
More tree stuff... and rocks. We have a lot of both around here...
Gratuitous bathing Beauty Shot for Prairie Toober!
Our approximate route...

Hey Stoo,
Your hurting me with those pictures. As soon as the weather permits it in 2009 my wife and I will be heading your way as mentioned over and over again. It looked like the perfect weekend for you guys with great pictures, simply amazing.
Cheers
John

LOL... That certainly wasn't the intent! As you know, it has been pretty "variable" weather this summer and we found that even when it was clear, it was often quite windy. Killarney is a long haul to be getting the Cr*p beat out of you!
This past weekend was as close to perfect as we have had all summer I think. It got pretty chilly at night, just above freezing, but at least that clears the bugs out!

Hi Stoo
I thought it was just horrible weather here in west scotland!! Your pics are absolutely great and do remind me of some parts of the west of scotland. It looks as if you had a wonderful cruise and you certainly made my night with views of your lovely country.
Cheers

Thanks Jambo... Killarney is a beautiful area. Quite different than here in Tobermory in terms of the rocks... Ours are limestone, sharp and grey. Theirs are granite and smooth and pink! Our water is nicer though...!
We do hear comparisons made with Scotland and Ireland from visitors, so there must be something to it!

You never know maybe sometime you will make it over and see the other Tobermory on Mull and compare for yourself.
Cheers

It's on the list! So far the closest I've come is a bottle of Tobermory Scotch!

I've commented on that before... whenever I look at photos of your "parts" there is frequently cities and boats all over the place, although that is typical of parts of the other lakes...
Just to rub it in, on this entire cruise... 155 miles over 2 1/2 days... we saw no more than 4 boats moving... one in Tobermory and three little put-puts in the village of Killarney. Once we headed off to the area where we camped, human contact consisted of seeing a float plane passing overhead...
The downside is of course, that if you have a problem on the lake, you had best have a good radio and a spare or two, and be prepared for a long wait for help! I am always careful to tell friends where we are going and when we'll be back. I don't suppose it does any good mind you...

2-3 day
Telling friends and making a trip plan is always good but it’s the 2-3 day wait tell someone actually misses you that is a bummer.

Here's a few pics from last weekend on our busy St. Lawrence! It was another fabulous weekend, but the markers were missing from the wreck sites which required a little sonar searching...
The first two pics are of Boldt Castle... Some interesting history here: http://www.boldtcastle.com/history.html
The second two are active lighthouses, but being uses as private homes or cottages.

Still no other boats though!
I expected it to fairly busy down there, but just a few big fellas going past. Some of the areas we dive are right under these guys in narrow, fast channels... A fella needs to be careful where he surfaces!
And a gratuitous shot of my toy (with shiney new 150!), Mrs. Stoo and our Best Girl!

As usual Stoo tremendous pics what glorious scenery!! The last pic of your 'baby' is that a black metal box you have welded to the A frame for your aux tanks?
Keep ribbing

That's correct... I had them added when the frame was being built. My boat has a 131 litre inboard tank and with about 50 litres in the aux tanks, I have a range of about 180 miles... which comes in handy on occassion. I don't tend to leave them full since its a bit of weight back there, but if we're heading out for a few days it's nice to have the extra.
I've considered having a second set of tanks back there... One lager and the other ale...
