Blimey

I am obviously being over-sensitive about hard landings in mine!

Superb photos - I love the "low flying boat buzzes people in the water" one

I mean I don't think it's good for your boat. But you can usually give em some hard abuse. Have snapped a transom before but that was more from water ingress than jumping.

Most people in their boats are out of the water much more than they may realise. When ricky and myself took our pics of a Tornado wave jumping I had no intention of making big air, it felt very normal. However they look extreme.
We gave the pics to Barnet Marine, and they have not posted them on their Web site as they do not want to endorse such behaviour!! Although will use them if customers want a view of the hull!!!

A bit too much air.

Head on into a wake.

Think it was 1994 or 95, so perhaps the memories aren't quite correct, but the landing was relatively smooth. Only the radar reflector came loose. The boat stayed straight during flight and landed square on its keel in the aerated water of the wake. Had it rolled in the air then I guess that the landing wouldn't have been great.

As people have stated, when you're in the air it doesn't feel quite so high. Think the photo provided a few shocks!

Lesson is - 29kts into a 16kt wake can launch you further than you anticipate.

I've gone over the 20kt wake of one of the Halmatic launches belonging to the company I work for - it was a fair old bump but I don't remember a sea/sky/sea visual experience looking forwards - what was creating the wake?

That is a superb photo....

Amazing picture but why don't they get the balance of boats right? Again too stern heavy - with twins the console would be better off further forward to balance the boat out a bit better.

I think if you throw any boat into a wake at that speed it will go up bow first regardless of the weight.

If theres two much weight at the front of the boat, the bow will tend to come down faster than you want...

Me and Gray found that on the way up to Littlehampton earlier this year - we had 50 litres of spare fuel in the front which kept making the bow come down into the next wave

you see cod - its that attitude that gets people on here wound up with you. I would tend to believe that the RNLI's design team and the naval architecht engaged by halmatic etc know a little more about the pros/cons of moving the console forward, than you do having owned one rib for a few months. I know you own a sib too and have lots of other boating experience as you like to remind anyone who questions your credentials - but I don't believe you have ever designed a lifeboat, a rib or indeed dozens of them.

Made for a wet and bumpy ride, proof that it was the fuel making the difference was when someone took a fancy to the fuel and nicked it over night! No spare fuel in bow on the return journey, a lot smoother and much drier ride home!

RIBase
These aren't me-they were posted on iboats by Drowned Rat but they have to be my favourite wave jumping shots so far. It's a US coastguard SR5.4.

The guy taking the pics must have had some serious bottle to take his eyes off the sea ahead...

The problem is that the SR 5.4 is probably a work boat. I would quite happily take chances with work boats but I certainly wouldn't take chances with my own pride and joy.

Now remind me how fast did they say a Ford Transit could go !!!

No but I do understand the laws of Physics. Obviously there are drawbacks as well which is why the new boats have bow ballast tanks fitted.

Maybe I have never designed a RIB but Humber have done quite a few - plenty of those with the console far forward so it's NOT only me!!!

Finally got our SIB back after a 9 month repair. What a bunch of BS. Anyways we are just happy to have it back. Got two boats now. Great for pictures!

Hey Nos4r2,

That SR5.4 is crazy! Thats the furthest I've seen any RIB out the water. I don't know if I would be trying that with our RIB but maybe the SIB.
