Marine crime initiative - please pass this on

We are sending out a copy of this to all the marinas and moorings we can find, but you nice people are going to know of some that we don't and so it would be really kind if you could stick a copy on any notice boards or web sites that seem appropriate.

BTW Thanks to everyone who has already come forward to help with this, we are trying to arrange a get together for everyone to meet and make free with the beer account.

NOTICE TO BERTH HOLDERS:

Please find below details of an initiative that we think you will be interested in - a national body to bring together and help all the current security efforts as well as assist new ones to start up.

Several local schemes have proven the effectiveness of a deterrent to vandals and thieves, we want to help reproduce that all around the country and build on the achievements.

We have also begun work on a comprehensive (and free) national database, where boat owners can register their vessel and record every last detail. So that in event of a loss the right details can be given to the insurance company, the police and perhaps most importantly to the network of other Harbour Watch members.

By making use of these two activities, we hope to make a big impact on marine crime and to help promote safe boating.

Please pass this message on to your berth holders or club members.

Martin

NOTICE ENDS

Cheers all!

Well observed! The downloadable form is not on there yet, I am told Monday - so expect Friday.

I shall pop in and make that a bit clearer, thank you for the pointer and please look back next week.

Sorry, call me cynical. I have reservations of giving my details of my boat etc... imagine what a database of all boats in the country is worth...

No, you are absolutely spot on.

The concerns are all starting to be aired here:

Harbour Watch Membership - now open

Hi again, we launched the initiative "officially" at Beaulieu over the weekend and the registration form is now live.

Please download the form (you may need to update your Adobe Acrobat Reader) and send it in to us.

The concept is a simple one, by having details of the unique quirks of your RIB we will be able to help the Police to successfully recover it by searching for those individual features that all boats have.

We are tying in with stolenboats.org.uk and thefts reported to us will go out as part of their system, likewise there data will be added to our Watch Reports that give brief details of what to look out for; these reports get sent to all other HW Members as well as marina managers, harbour masters and brokers.

We think we have found a way to turn passive data into a very active and promising "community", so please join in:

www.harbourwatch.org.uk/registry.html

We also need people who can act a voluntary Point of Contact for their local area, if that sounds like you please get in touch.

Stolen boat reports

Our Watch Reports are about to go live, at the moment using data from stolenboats.org.uk but in the undesirable event that a boat registered with us gets nicked then that report will be more comprehensive.

You can see the current Watch Report here:
http://www.harbourwatch.org.uk/downl...atchreport.pdf

If you have a notice board or window you could put the latest one in/on then that would be great.

You can subscribe to automatic alerts by emailing "join Watch List" to hq@harbourwatch.org.uk

Thanks to all who contributed to the basic sea safety thread, that project is coming together nicely now.
